How much do you spend on groceries a month on average?
For how many people?
Do you think you spend more than you need to?

I am trying to help a friend budget and they don't think their current grocery spending habits are unreasonable.

Looks like we average and even split $1300/month each groceries and dining out for all food consumption.

2 adults and 2 9 year olds

Of course we spend more than we need. If budget was a concern we could probably cut in half and do with out a lot of wants.

Our grocery and restaurant budget is $1500/mo. Family of 5 including three kids 4 and under.

This includes everything that comes from the grocery store such a paper goods, dog food, cleaning items, etc.

It seems ridiculous, but I really don't think we have many opportunities to cut back.

According to the Every Dollar app, we have budgeted:

$500 grocery store
$400 Costco
$150 Restaurants
$200 Formula

2 Adults, 4 yo and 7 month old

Could honestly strip that down more if we really needed to. Probably won't use the whole restaurant budget. This also isn't just food but includes paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, wine, and other items you'd get on a grocery run.

One adult and one 17 yo. I think I spend about $800 per month at the grocery store. Last time I went to a restaurant was Waffle House on Christmas Day.

About $1000 at HEB
And about $200 at a butcher every few months and Costco about 3 times a year

2 adults, 1 kid. We eat out 4-5 times a month but pack lunches

2 Boys at A&M cost more than double what my wife and I spend on ourselves. They are both into bodybuilding so they don't party or eat out much so I just pay the bill. Probably about $1,300-1,500

I probably average about 1,400 a month with my wife and I and soon to be 12 and 9 year old. That's not including a monthly trip to Costco and eating out. I'm sure I'm over 2,000.

If you want to be secluded and have to forage through cabinets and current supply, I HIGHLY recommend having groceries delivered each week or every two weeks.

But I'm an old troll that doesn't want to leave my house soooo. I'm sitting at 2-300 dollars each month. Not having kids and eating popcorn and cheese for a meal is a gift!

$1400/month for 4 people. Could be less if it needed to be.

Probably about $600 for 2 people. We could definitely make it cheaper if we wanted to.

I don't understand how some of you are so low. I feel like we spend $300 per week for two people and buy mostly meat, milk, eggs, and fresh produce. That doesn't cover lunches either as those come from Snap Kitchen.

2 adults 3 boys aged 7-10, $2000/month on groceries, $1200/month at restaurants. Most of yall are impressively low.

Same. I am shocked by some of these low numbers.

$2,000/mo for our family of 5, and we don't even buy anything crazy. Mostly HEB with some Costco.

This is not dinners out, fast food, etc., just grocery stores.

$250 for restaurants, $50 for fast food.

yeah $2000/month for family of 5 doesn't feel exorbitant to me...there is nothing outlandish in our weekly grocery orders. hard to fathom cutting that # in half

Not a whole lot, I always fill my chest freezer up with venison and fish, so I don't have to buy meat very often.

800-900/month for me, wife and two kids. We meal plan pretty thoroughly and only eat out maybe once ever few weeks. We could probably whittle that down more if we didn't have picky eaters.

Or be Orthodox Christian whose celebration of Pascha comes after "American" Easter is over and get all of your Pascha candy and egg dyes at a great discount.

Are you considering food only or including other essentials (toothpaste, laundry detergent, etc)? We're about $850 for everything not counting eating out.

I worked at a grocery store in high school. At 6am the morning after Easter/Valentines Day/Halloween, we'd mark the leftover holiday candy up to 2x the original price. Then around 8am we'd put out signs that said "holiday candy: 50% off!"

We couldn't sell enough of it.

Close to 2000. Two adults, and a 3yo and 1.5yo. Could cut it way back if wife didn't go organic everything. This includes non food items as well from grocery store.
