Curious from those who have read through the entire series whether you thought it was worth the time investment by the time you finished. I'm currently mid-way through book 6 and starting to wonder if I have another 8 of these books in me. I'm not a voracious reader, so they are taking me a while, and some of the story lines are getting dull. I've read that there is a slog portion of the series, maybe that's where I am.

When I finish a chapter about Nynaeve and Elayne, only to turn the page to yet another chapter about Nynaeve and Elayne, I feel defeated. I don't care about them or Egwene anymore, but for some reason Robert Jordan decided to beat the reader over the head with the least interesting storyline for hundreds of pages.

Should I push through or jump ship?

I've only read the series up to book 12. I'm rereading them now and just started book 10. I forgot how monotonous these middle books are. I'm struggling to get through them as well but have heard that the last couple books that finish out the series make it worth it.

Since I've already read these, I've turned to skimming. I'm reading a couple of sentences per page and if the storyline or dialog is dragging it's on to the next page. Was the only way to get through book 10. I hope book 11 picks back up again but if I remember correctly, those last few books is why i never finished the series in the first place.

Such a shame he drug it out like he did. Those first 3 or 4 books were sooooo good but most of the middle ones are pretty much just forgettable filler.

Read 4 or 5 books 20 years ago and have always debated starting from scratch but I have a hard time justifying reading a series where 1/3 - 1/2 of it people recommend to just read summaries online.

This is my favorite book series. I've probably read the first book eye of the world 20 times. I read the entire series once every three years. Every time I read it I pick up a different nuance that I did not notice before.

I obviously think it's worth it. The foreshadowing, prophecies, magic system, character growth, payoffs are all amazing.

But, as an admitted biased super fan, this series is not for everyone if you don't have the patience. And there are three books that do get slow. I think 1/2 is unfair, but there are three that require some perseverance. But even the slow books have some big moments.

He dragged out the Perrin Faile and Elayne succession storylines too long.

Anyway, I think it's worth the journey and would recommend at least one more read through to truly enjoy all of the hints and foreshadowing he planted in tbe early books. If you find those three books to be too much, switch to audio books.

This gives me pause as I just started the first book in the series for the first time. Hopefully it hooks me well enough to slog through the middle books.

I couldn't make it through the first book. I'm a voracious fantasy reader, but nothing about this series caught my interest.

I'd also say that the Slog is a little overrated these days. When it was first published, there were two or three years between the Slog books, which made it more frustrating that the plot wasn't progressing so quickly. That being said, the pace does notably slow down for awhile after Book 6-7. Still worth reading, I think, as there are some great moments in the latter books, I.e., (without spoiling) "Does he ride alone?"

The main problem with the middle books is the repetitive nature of the descriptions. Each chapter seems to have 20% of the content describing how people dress/look/act that has already been described dozens of times before throughout the series. I don't need to know how and why certain people wear masks, how the Seanchan have green, scaly armor that resembles bugs, how the Aiel dress in Caiden Sor to match their dessert surroundings or how ageless Ai Sedai look over and over and over and over. That is what mainly makes the books a slog.

That and all the petty bickering and arguing between Egwene and Nenayve while one pouts and the other tugs on her braid. Such a waste of paper that Jordan couldn't seem to get enough of.

I've read through the series more than 10 time now (there are few good books that capture my attention so I tend to go back to good ones).

I think most all the "slogging" pays off in the final 3-4 books.
Keep in mind Jordan was building a world, not just writing stories.
As it plays out... one can start to see how the "wheel" turns and what had happened again does, but the tails of old had changed with the re-tellings.

I suggest starting at book 1 and getting through all.
Then do a re-read and see what you had missed the first go round.

As for the girls bickering..... it shows the power struggles as other come up and grow.
It's a very good "human" tale.

Although there were some storylines that I did not enjoy, I really liked the series overall. I almost started it again immediately upon finishing it. Not sure when I'll reread it since there are always so many other things on my list, but I definitely plan to one day.

Agree with a lot that's been said. My advice for OP is continue on if you can! It is well worth it.

I had a break between books recently and figured why the heck not, let's reread TEotW. Here I am now in book 4 just plugging away at my first legit series reread. Always wanted to reread it one day and here we are!

I enjoy finding first time reader reactions on YouTube. It gives me a small dose of nostalgia living vicariously through their perspectives as they come across important reveals or major events in the books.

Two of my college buddies used to tease me as I read through those books. When Amazon announced the TV series, they started the audio books and loved the series. They actually apologized for the good natured teasing as they got sucked into the universe.

I didn't mind and enjoyed being a non spoiler resoure for them as they had questions about the books. Again, it was nice to relive my experiences through them.
