I'm not sure if this is a fluke or an indicator of things to come but this week, for the first time since 1990, there is not a rap song in the American Top 40.

If you listen to what is considered "rap" today, nobody should be surprised.

Some of that is likely to do with Taylor Swift taking up twelve spots on her own.

I started this thread because I'm hopeful it's an indicator. However, I don't even listen to non-rap Top 40 so, other than rap not being as much in the zeitgeist, it won't really affect me directly one way or another. I did think it was interesting, though.

Rap is not and has never been music.

From the article:

Quote:

"Rap music is still all over the top 40; it's just not being made by rappers," Stereogum's Tom Breihan observed in a column published Thursday, Oct. 30.

Rap infected other genres, while other genres infected rap. Stead dilution of product.

Funny enough the last real rock radio station is still playing in Corpus Christi.

C101….ROCKS

Not sure if they remained independent but clear channel and heart radio killed rock radio and possibly rock music all together for mainstream

Same. My presets are Classic Rewind, 80s on 8, 70s on 7, Hair Nation, Ozzys Boneyard, Yacht Rock, and The Blend. I rarely deviate from those stations.

You forgot Classic Vinyl and Lithium channels. Also the Pearl Jam channel and Metallica channel!

Rap has never been in worse shape than today. The beats are terrible, there is zero creativity or use of ahh instruments. It's just depressing computer sounds. The actual rappers are a bunch of low IQ dolts with nothing to say with bad delivery. Everyone involved is some emo kid that smokes too much strong weed which zaps creativity and gives off an air of dark and moody. It's just crap all around.

Lots of great rock out there you just have to dig for it. Try the following bands as a seed for your stream of music:

Plush
Halestorm
The Pretty Reckless
Eclipse
Dirty Honey
Crazy Lixx

Eddie Trunk does a fairly regular feature where he spotlights up & coming bands.

I did forget Classic Vinyl and First Wave. The others, not so much...when they have channels dedicated to specific bands, it's usually too many deep cuts for my taste. And I probably like 20% of the songs on Lithium channel...

Top 40 isn't meant for me, and hasn't been meant for me since the 90s. When I go to a Collective Soul / Live 90s concert or Blackberry Smoke show, I hear my music and see a lot of dudes who look like me. I'm pretty sure any artist from the Top 40 could walk on stage and be mistaken for a sound guy or background singer at most concerts I attend.

And if you like to complain about Top 40... be patient. AI is about to nuke every pop star with Top 40 ambitions. Lynyrd Skynyrd will still be selling out the Sheds every summer until we're all dead and gone.

Rap is just talking in rhymes.

It's a great option for people that can't carry a tune and don't have the discipline to learn an instrument.

I think your reply does a pretty good job.

Rap is nursery rhymes for reetards.

Old Rap (80's-90's) had some stuff that was great. The past 15-20 years has been steadily downhill.
Dr. Dre, Beastie Boys, 2Pac, Snoop, RUN DMC, Ice Cube, Ghetto Boys, etc. were part of the soundtrack of my youth along with GNR, Pearl Jam, George, Garth etc.

Pop, Rock, Rap, Country were much more distinct genres & I enjoyed them all depending upon my mood.
Now the lines are much more blurred & all are worse as a result. Still some acts out there true to genre, but overall music quality is down across the board IMO.

Rap is absolutely music. It's fine you don't like it, but look up the definition of music, it fits. If your argument is that there's no singing, then Mozart isn't music.

A drumbeat and talking in rhymes ain't music. Also using someone else's music as a background is for lazy non-musicians.

Not a fan of "Roll the Bones" I'm guessing.

Not surprised. The stuff I hear sounds laughable. Sounds like the guy just woke up from his nap after wisdom teeth surgery and is lying on the couch digging eye boogers out while recording the track.

MF Doom was good, I'm sure more modern stuff is good but I mainly just hear the kids listening to the mumblers.

Go back to ATCQ, Black Sheep, Del the Funky Homosapien, etc for stuff that can be considered musical.

Early rap was well made, thoughtful lyrics that spoke to issues or just made you wanna dance, and had decent production value.
Rap today is garbage that ran out of decent ideas decades ago. Not at all surprised by this.
