I have been wanting to take up wood working. I am thinking about making axe handles. I am not a big fan of the mass manufactured handles. Plus I don't have room for a lot of wood furniture. Anyone have any experience making them or have any hints? Recommend and books or websites for making them?

It is going to be with hand tools, as I have no room for bench work. Which is another reason to do axe handles, the fun of woodwork without having to find places for furniture.

Before anyone says it, yes Jews do woodwork. In fact I can think of one famous Jewish carpenter.

eh yeah without at least a jig saw, preferably a band saw, to get your initial shape this is going to be a big pain. all you have to do after the initial shape is ream it then sand it which is A LOT more work than it sounds.

Forget the lathe, just get some scissors and paper with stickers and you can glue it to the axe with wood glue so you can say you worked with wood. Remember safety first so try not to use the pointy scissors. Then duct tape a flashlight to it and you've got yourself a lamp or sconce if you tape it to the wall.

I may be interested in acquiring quantities of your fine product. I've been wanting to offer custom wrapped and bound handles, even talked to Holicks about the leather, I just haven't had the time to standardize the wraps. Anyway, Aggie handles good. Me want.

If it's going to be an axe for yourself, couldn't you just use paper mache? It's not like it needs to be sturdy or anything. Bwahahahahaha!

Lew, if you make yourself a handle, make it about 6 inches longer, so you don't miss the tree anymore.

lol, interesting group this is. Not in a bad way of any sort either. I think custom axe-handles is the coolest idea i've heard since...well a long freakin time.
Oh and sometimes if you yell at the trees first it stuns them long enough to swing (it worked for me, sometimes, i did a lot of yelling)
