How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have a vague memory that i wa to young to have asked about when it happend...

In either 97 or 98(almost positive it was 98), we came into town right before bonfire. We passed, down on texas ave., a group of( what i think were)BQ's with the frat house in the back of a pickup.

They seemed to be an awfuly long way from campus, and now that i think about it, was there something specificaly tradition oriented with this, or had they just decided to take a cruise with said frat house....

I was a little kid at the time, and was just so happy to have seen the frat house i never have thought to ask...

I imagine the frat house was built off campus. My dad was a BQ c/o '81, they built the out house in my grandparents garage, where there is still a large orange stain from the paint.

I was a BQ orangepot last year, and yes, we build it off campus and then drive it to the site.

Can't blame us if we show it off though, can you?

It may be Hollywooding but I say drive it all over town, hell drive it to Houston and back. Let people know Bonfire is burning.

BQs are used to parading around, may as well let them do what they are good at.

No blame to it, just wanted to clarify a kind of disjointed memory from my childhood .

whoop!

On a side note. I was at ACL Fest this weekend. After watching Willie play to an enormous crowd I got to watch Fightin' Texas Aggie Football on an enormous screen they had set up there. The tent was divided between Ags and Army. It was fun hearing "whoop" in the middle of Austin City Limits.

One of the best moments in Bonfire history was in '97 ('96 maybe?) when the BQs showed up with their outhouse and the reds informed them that they had already acquired one from the cav. They didn't even get to play Bonfire that year.

^^^^^ wasn't this directly related to the Redpot Log incident?

May have been. The band was also restricted one year because the previous year they threw torches early, thus the following year they weren't given torches but instead had to march in with glowsticks.

The band lit the thing at some point?

If im not mistaken that was pretty common? isnt that why the DMs march with torches...

They didn't light it they just marched in with the torches then put them out after doing their laps.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Yeller, what do you mean by them throwing the torches early?
oldyeller

Maybe it's just senility setting in, but I seem to recall that one year the DMs tossed their torches into stack before the Reds had a chance to throw theirs and thus created some seriously pissed off Reds. The following year the DMs didn't get torches to march in with, but instead had glo-sticks to march in with. It is that incident I am referring to.

Im shocked something like that wouldnt result in an all out brawl.

I do recall the story about The Drum Majors prematurely lighting stack. It was in the early nineties, I thought.

BTW, for all you guys talking about getting excited seeing the outhouse, etc. Whoop whoop and all of that.

How about this year when it makes it to the field you don't all stand in a stunned daze and ask "who is that?" "what is that?" "What are they doing?"

There were crickets chirping last year when they showed up.

I agree.

I think the "Who are they?" came from no one really seeing any BQs until that moment. They need to get out there more.

bq's were the outfit who came the most, schedule permitting. they even came out a couple nights before they had to travel to away games.

I don't know if they came the most, but there was a decent-sized people-who-just-happened-to-be-in-the-band crew out there. With a ram.

The Redpot log incident was in '96. The BQs went out to cut site and beaver-cut Redpot log in half. Quite a sight! Of course, it took a few days to figure out who did it, and to say the Reds were pissed is an understatement. We took hell until the truth came out. My one and only trip inside the hotel.

Mine too.

Pretty cool in there. A couple of sofas and lots of handles is what I remember. Oh yeah, that and the chain saws running outside. The jrs. were so pissed, but it was really funny.

I'll never forget the night I got to hang out in the Red shack. It was the evening before Centerpole was raised in '99. My buddies and I had been awarded Centerpole and just finished the flag to put on top of stack. We were taken for a "trip" to some place by the river and then returned to campus to clean up and "compose ourselves" (sober up).

We walked over to the fields where we took care of fish wrap, met a bunch of Reds & Deads, and walked around inside perimeter. The Reds brought us inside the shack and the Sr. Red started off a grode story. We all got a plug of Copenhagen (Long cut)then took turns adding to the story, up to the last of our buddies who ended it with "...and (it) spurted out all over the (EDIT) and spelled "17 BUILDS BONFIRE!"

After that, we dropped handles with the two Reds from our outfit and most of us spent the rest of the night hanging out and soaking it in.
