Gates was not standing in the way of getting Bonfire back on campus.

If you think Gates was the problem with bringing Bonfire back, you don't understand the problem

Seriously, I am a huge supporter of tradition, and I miss the bonfire... however I don't believe anyone in their right mind can actually think Bonfire can come back to campus and be what it once was.

do they have a band out there to play? I mean any sort of war hymn? It may not be the Aggie Band but still. I hope the off-campus ones are getting better

Spirit leaving aggieland? Seems a bit overwrought.

The relationships that are built at A&M are what keep the spirit in Aggieland. There are still numerous other vehicles through which these relationships can be built (Corps, Student Groups, etc.). Although some of my fondest memories involve Bonfire, my most rewarding relationships at the school had nothing to do with Bonfire.

it could be supervised better. a safer structure could be built. waivers signed by everyone who works on it. how's that for starters?

everything in life has some risk. doesn't mean we stop doing it. that's what this country has sadly come to. we want to blame someone else and look for someone to sue. i can't believe we still drive on the highway.

For my own edification, someone please describe in detail how "changing times" (whatever the hell that means) have been caused by the loss of bonfire

Also, please refrain from using phrases starting with "From the outside looking in...." or "Hwy 6 runs both ways..."

And why does everyone always blame lawyers and political correctness?

The thing fell because we were too wrapped up with ourselves to see that our blind worship of anything resembling tradition created an environment where we ran anyone out of town who might have raised an intelligent question like "is it really safe to have college kids build a large structure without detailed blue prints?"

I like to think that not bringing bonfire back might help us realize that sometimes we have to take the blinders off.

1. Off Campus Bonfire is professionally engineered, overseen by a professional board of directors, and built to spec.

2. Waivers have been a standard of the organization for years.

I personally invite any of you to come help build next weekend with me. I'll be there Friday (17th) through Wednesday morning and would be delighted to explain every facet of the Off Campus Bonfire. Having worked on all the off-campus Bonfires as well as one on-campus, I would be happy to parallel the two operations, their similarities, and Student Bonfire's improvements.

While there, you are also free to work a few hours, talk with the 1,000+ students building Bonfire, and observe the product of months of labor. If, after talking with a veteran of Off-Campus Bonfire, meeting the students, and working beside them; you aren't sold on Student Bonfire being "Real Bonfire", you can revel in being the first to do so.

piag, not only when some of the spirit left; but also when some of th t.u. rivalry died.

I support the off-campus bonfire. However, it scares the h*ll out of me. I don't think the student leadership fully understands the liability issue. We had trouble getting insurance when we were building it 15 years ago. I can't imagine what an appropriate amount of insurance would cost now.

The only way Bonfire should ever come back to campus is if it's truly student run, student led, and student built. Paying for engineers to build a bonfire is unacceptable. I would rather go retro and just burn a big pile of trash and pallets on Simpson Drill Field.

Student Bonfire already is using a design that was designed by a PE. The design has been shown to be stable (even under intentional abuse (for testing)) and it can be built by students... very little machinary needed.
