Well, since the powers that be decided to have burn on a TUESDAY and thousands of us can't make it, is there any chance someone will be video taping Bonfire for myself and others who can't make it?

I've recorded the previous bonfires with my digital camera and will do my best to record bonfire again on Tuesday. I'll try to remember to post the vids on You Tube and put the links here.

Everyone get out there on Tuesday and help keep the tradition alive.

thousands wouldn't be able to make it on any day of the week. That's the downfall of a 1-night show.

Just so you can plan accordingly Bonfire 2007 should be burning on Gameday -1.

To be convenient for everyone, maybe they should just burn it in October? Check your calendar. What does February look like?

Guys, its a tradition to hold it before the game against t.u. So, convince the "powers that be" to move the football game to a Saturday if you really want a Saturday burn.

Good luck with that!

Per tradition, SB charges 5 dollars to get in, is off campus, all logs touch the ground...get with the program.

The bonfire has to change, and SB has made changes in order to ensure it's success, however, burning during the week isn't in its best interest, we've done this before.

It was on Wednesday's for ever when the game was on Turkey day (up until 95 or 96, I can't remember). Tuesday is a good because most students haven't left yet for turkey day back home.

No matter when it is I'll be there.

if we lose in the thousands i guess less people will be out there than worked on it.

Umm, morons, it's not following tradition. Two nights before an away game is wednesday night. Get a clue before lecturing or making smart ass comments. I could make it on Wednesday because my wife has off the day before Thanksgiving and I have off Thanksgiving so we'll probably shut down early the day before. Tuesday is just a random night of the week.

bgrimm05 - the only two times we played on Friday in Austin and had Bonfire on campus - '96 and '98 - Bonfire burned on Tuesday.

So Tuesday is not just a 'random night of the week'.

Of course, you were - what? a sophomore in high school in '98? - so I wouldn't expect you to have your facts straight.

Wow. Age smack. Weak. Yes, I am aware that it burned on Tuesday those two times, because it had always been on the Tuesday before away games when the game was on Thanksgiving and they really didn't know if they should change it when the game was moved to T+1. We are talking about the traditional day. You agree with me. You said so yourself.

No, traditionally it burned two days before the game, which would be T-1, since the game is on T+1.

That quote below makes me wonder if you are agreeing with me, disagreeing with me, or a 30 year old loser who just want to continue an argument. Ooops, there I go with the age smack.

The bottom line, is if Student Bonfire is a "business", it should consider the best case scenario for all parties involved.

so...

you're saying we should build 7 stacks? ...one for each night of the week?

or maybe 364, just in case...

Byron, I know you are pissed about missing burn this year, but looking at it from a rational perspective, this is the best day to hold it.

Wednesday would be disasterous for current students as the vast majority will be going home that day.

Saturday is plain out of the question because of 11/18. Sunday, monday and Tuesday therefore are your possible options. Of the three options, I (and upper leadership seems to think this way) Tuesday is the best option. There are pros and cons for any of the three: it just depends on what Student Bonfire's priorities lie.

I empathize with your frustration and I'm rather pissed that a better solution couldn't be found, but that's the way it goes some times. As we often say, burn only exists to get rid of the stack to make room for next year.

This will be a sad night for FHK as there will be virtually none of the 'old' people there. Outside of the two person Yellow line, no complete FHK line will be there. But **** happens and we'll deal with it.

SquareOne07

Why was 11/18 out of the question? That's ridiculous, and you all well know it. What was wrong with Friday then, was that out of the question too? Sometimes when you run a business, you have to consider what's best for the business.

Someday an Aggie is going to have to do something on November 18th, and I'm sure those 12 would have wanted it that way too.
sharklady00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
There is nothing at all rediculous in keeping Nov 18th closed. This is the day where we remember the 12 fallen Aggeis who were and still our our Aggie brothers and sisters.

It is never rediculous to set aside a day in memory of loved ones, even if you were not their friends or even knew their names. It is the respectful thing to do.

A day will come when an event happens on November 18th, but while there are other options, I think many Aggies would prefer to leave that day open in their memory.

Again, I am sorry burn is inconvenient for you and several others. I strongly encourage you to jump in on a planning committee to make sure a better date is picked for the future. Complaining here probably won't produce the same ouctome.
sharklady00

Please do not speak for the 12 Aggies that have passed. You don't represent them or what they stood for. Please show respect.

Don't lecture me.

Nobody is showing disrespect here. It's important to remember and everything, but it is not necessary to come to a hault on that day, and SB needs to do what's best for SB. Tragedy should not be memorialized by stopping and shutting down our lives.

FIFY

Again I say, if this is a "business" look at it for all parties' perspective. Do you really think that those students who feel they just HAVE to go home early to momma will care about Bonfire enough to even show up whether its on Tuesday or Wednesday? I've been around too long for anyone to tell me otherwise. Besides, if it has to burn early and most everyone has to be out by 9:30 or whatever, it's not like students can't drive home that night.

Most former students do not have a choice. I repeat, most former students DO NOT have a choice. There's the difference. And I ask, where does most of the money for Bonfire come from (or should come from)? Former students. Why would I, as a former student donate toward something that doesn't think about me? I complete intended on donating to ASB and called Kevin on how I should go about it, until I heard when burn was. My donation turned into the $5 I paid for my cut card for the couple of cuts I made it to. Of course, I'm no big time donor, but I could be some day.

What do you think Kyle Field and the rest of our football facilities would look like if BB catered to only the students? What would attendence be if all the games were on Tuesday night because a lot of students like to go home on the weekend?

Look at it from all angles. Not that many more students will show up Tuesday night vs. Wednesday night. Thousands more former students would show up Wednesday night vs. Tuesday night just because it was made a possibility. It's a lot easier to get off early from work the day before a holiday than 2 days early.

Man, I hope I'm completely wrong and Brandy and I are the only former students unable to attend and 10,000 students show up along with 10,000 former students. But I doubt it. In any event, by the responses on this board, it doesn't seem like former students were really even considered.

Most former students really don't know about SB unless they are really searching for it. Maybe they need a strong alumni presence in their planning committee to help with the alumni aspect of the organization and burn night.

But most students aren't going home on those weekends: Take a look at the Kyle Field east stands. Students will stay if they have a reason to.

When has ANY SB burn had 10k people show up?

My point exactly. If its not important enough to them to stay an extra half day just to see what it's like, they wouldn't come anyway.

None. I actually said 10k students and 10k former students, but I was just throwing out a huge exaggerated number. Hell, if 7k-8k showed up it would probably shoot down any of my arguments. Of course, then there's always the "what ifs". Even if 10k showed up, how many would have showed up if it was on a different day?
TexasRebel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
FWIW, it doesn't seem like many former students had much trouble getting down here on a Tuesday for Burn back in the 80's and 90's...
SquareOne07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Probably because it was the same Bonfire they took a part in and it was on campus...
bgrimm05
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not to mention estimates say attendance fluctuated from 25K-80K. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the lower numbers were for away game fires. SB doesn't need that right now. SB needs the most number of people possible, good PR, and a well-planned event that reminds people of the "good ol' days".

Start by getting those pictures out there. They are awesome and remind my off my Bonfires. Flood the newspapers in and around CS with them. Call radio stations, take out advertising.

I signed up for an e-mail list in 2002 and I think I got two e-mails from it. Get that back up and running, collect addresses and let people know what is going on.
