How long do you want to ignore this user?
I went out to the Bonfire Memorial earlier and took some pics on this beautiful day. I thought I'd share.

Never forget!

Thank you, great pictures. I walked through the memorial last weekend when I was there for the football game, it is always very emotional when I go through it. Your pictures are the next best thing to being able to walk through it myself and pay my respects.

Thank you. I thought I might not cry this year. I was wrong.

A powerful thing. I took my parents, sister, and her boyfriend there once when they were down for a visit. My mom and sister were choked up (especially after The Last Corps trip) and wouldn't talk for a while after we left. My dad was pretty moved too, but my sister's boyfriend, who's a sip, just said 'Wow...a few times I've wished I came here instead of UT, and this is one of them.'

Very powerful memorial. Has a great power over Aggies and non-Aggies (I'm the first Aggie in my family) alike. But remind me again, what are the notches for? I always forget those.

To which notches are you referring?

If I remember correctly, the notches with names on them are for Aggies who passed away on their way to/from working on Bonfire.

The large section missing (1963) is to indicate the year that Bonfire didn't burn, after President Kennedy's assassination.

Yes, the notches along the walkway to the memorial with names in them are for those who died in Bonfire related incidents prior to 1999. The injured are remembered by the 27 stone panels that connect the 12 portals.

The details of the design may be found here:

There are notches in all of the stones, not just the years in which people died. IIRC, they represent Bonfire's burn date in November.

Maybe someone can answer this for me:

What is the meaning of the money that is on the centerpole? I've never seen that before.
