What is/was your favorite part of bonfire? Cut, Stack, or Burn? For me, it is easily cut. There is something about waking up on a saturday morning, having campus be so quiet on the way out, getting to the woods, and then, at the end of the day, looking back and seeing a huge swath of forest gone because of the work put in all day.

Yeah, but then there's stack when you actually get to see it being built.

I always loved stack.

You got to see it being built, you could easily go work even when it wasn't your shift, and you met other Aggies from all over campus.

Favorite phase: Stack. There is something about seeing it go up. Despite the fact that I am scared of heights, there was something about sitting in a fourth-stack swing screaming at the top of your lungs for a log. And the view from up there . . . I'll never see a sunrise like those ever again.

Favorite thing: the smells. Smoke, dust, deisel, motor oil. No one who was a part of Bonfire will ever mistake the smell of a perimeter fire or the smell of the dust out at LOAD/cut. Even now when a get a whiff of smoke on a cold night, or dust kicks up when I am working in the yard, I am instantly 19 again and working harder than I have ever worked before on something that is bigger and has more meaning than I can ever describe.

Least favorites: Ant logs (ouch), unload (b-tards undoing all that we worked so hard to do all day), go-home-rope (fear of heights).

Kip, I havent spent much time in these forums, but Im guessing youre from walton? I actually felt kind of bad for those guys this year. Since stack site is the same as cut this year, they really didnt get to do a whole lot, just putting all of the logs into piles around the perimeter.

I'm with kip and the swings...

I hate heights, but there's something about those swings, the sunset, and then sunrise from well above ground.

oh and kip...there's something different about this fire that hasn't happened since long long ago...

the stars at night are simply gorgeous. I have to admit that I'm guilty of climbing up to 4th stack (2nd tallest) and looking for shooting stars after the lights went out.

h1,

Yes, I lived in Walton from 1991 to 1994.

I would usually say cut, but stack has really grown on me. I love that no one is going to say Burn as their favorite phase.

I always loved that last week before Bonfire, when it NEVER looked like it could possibly be done on time, even on the day it was to burn - yet it always was.

I've lived in CS for 26 years and worked (in two different locations) across Texas Ave from the University for 14. Bonfire being gone from campus still feels like some one removed a whole season from the calendar. Fall just isn't the same. The day center pole would come in and stop traffic on Texas, the smell of the small perimeter fires... Then the primal gut feeling as the torch-led band came to the site... the reading of the "Last Corps Trip" - even watching it smoulder for a week after burn... Those memories are the reason I'm reluctant to go to the off campus Bonfire. I don't want to blur the memory of all the old Bonfires by going to one with out the band and all the pagentry (thats not quite the right word, but I can't quite spit the right one out....) that I remember. I know it can't (and probably shouldn't) be EXACTLY the same, and I know for the students, the feeling is in the building not nec. the burning, but as a former student, I'm scared of being disappointed.

You could not possibly be disappointed standing at burn watching thousands of young Ags who have worked harder than most people ever do to make this happen.

Plus you will still get chills when the perimeter lights go out and you see the torches making their way toward stack.

Have to admit - Walton Sorts made me laugh as well.

Kip - How are you doing? Nice to see some of the old Walton guys on here.

My favorite - the ultimate was the night of burn - to me a happy/sad/happy time. Happy in that you got to see how much all of the hardwork meant to the Aggie family. Sad becasue it was over. Happy again because you just realized you cleared the field so you could do it all over again the next year.

Howdy OW91 (E.H., right?)! I'm doing well. How about yourself?

Yeah, I hang out here because I feel the need to relive past glory. Yes, that means that, in general, I have no life.

Kip you are correct. I am doing well. How about yourself? Where are you these days?

Two Parts:
LOAD:
All that consists of LOAD!
Definitely being on the truck at LOAD, and the crews trying to knock you off for that great reward!

Stack:
Seeing it go up and get fatter by the hour. Being on a swing is probably one of the greatest thrills ever, too bad I never got to be on a 2nd,3rd or 4th stack!
