Good Bull!

Doing things right

More than 3,000 Aggies watched the professionally engineered, student-built bonfire burn in southern Robertson County. The sheriff arrested nobody. Apparently, the organizers were serious about complying with the law, eliminating alcohol on site and adhering to safety procedures.

One year ago, an Eagle editorial denounced students for igniting their bonfire in defiance of a countywide burn ban. Numerous letters to the editor debated the wisdom of continuing the bonfire tradition, and the debate among readers continued for weeks afterward.

This time, the students' efforts seem to have drawn the community's collective ho-hum. There's a lesson in this for these young people. You don't provoke much comment when you do things right.

However, one point begs to be made. The structure was so well-built that the center pole remained standing the next morning, despite the fact that the rest of the logs had been consumed by fire.

4 years and now we are "apparently" concerned with alcohol and safety?

The author makes a great point...when we do things right, not much press. This is exactly what we need - several years of successful burns and independent observations of "doing it right". Every year adds credibility to us and our organization.

Kudos to everyone who busted their @sses to makes this happen.

Thanks, guys.

The Eagle butchered the last paragraph, apparently in an honest effort to make all of the letters fit in the space allocated:

Here's what I wish they hadn't edited out.

"However, one point begs to be made. The structure was so well built that the center pole remained standing the next morning, despite the fact that the rest of the logs had been completely consumed by fire. Our beloved Aggie football team upheld the tradition. When Bonfire still stands past midnight, the Aggies beat the University of Texas."

Of course, I you guys knew what I was trying to say, even absent the last two sentences.
