Nobody brought it up, and I don't know if he ever visited the Bonfire forum.
I met with him twice as part of BC's push to get him to make a decision. He seemed genuinely interested in taking on the subject, although I can't say that his decision would have gone our way. But before he could make a decision, the state and system lawyers got to him.
Here's what I'd love to see happen. I realize is more of a dream than anything approaching reality.
One of these days, when the lawsuits settle and the new president is petitioned to bring Bonfire back, I wish he call up Dr. Gates in Seattle--who by this time will be enjoying his retirement. The new president would ask him to serve one more time.
I'd like Dr. Gates to head up a commission that would study the feasibility of resurrecting the on-campus Bonfire tradition and make a recommendation that the new president would follow.
I couldn't guarantee his recommendation would be one we'd like. But I think we know he'd look at it with an expert's eyes and an Aggie's heart. His opinion could be accepted by Aggies of all stripes.
