The smells and bells of worship

It's late or early and I have been thinking about how man worships God.

I'm sure ancient man had as elaborate forms of worship that more than likely involved copious amounts of incense and the occasional dinging of bells. We know Aaron was able to fashion a calf of gold, so we can imagine certain visuals to assist man with devotion.

What interests me is how Jesus handled the very first Eucharistic celebration in the upper room. It would seem that it did not have the level of decorum nor any mention of Jesus walking around the table with a censor blessing it before the meal.

Again, I understand the need to engage man at the sensory level. As an architect I can appreciate the construction of great places of worship. I'm just struck by the words of Jesus about tearing it down as if it is not the point of worship- because it is deeper than what we can see, hear, and smell.

Just a thought.

Are you confusing prescription with description? The decorum of the temple is elaborately laid out in the Old Testament and our worship is a continuation and fulfillment of it. Why would beauty distract from worship instead of enhance it?

"A smell pleasing to the Lord," indeed…

Just pointing out that one of the charges brought against Jesus was what he said about Temple. That fact is not insignificant in my opinion.

Many a Catholic (for example) has obsessed over the location of the tabernacle. RCC has a well defined liturgical guide for exactly these type of elements. In the end, as Paul puts it, they can be a noisy gong if we fail to love.

Intro to Worship:
Sacrifice - time and treasure
Service
verbal declarations
Spirit and Truth - declaration
posture
presenting your bodies

The first mention of worship in the NT is the Magi coming to worship the newborn king. How did they worship? Sacrificing time and treasure.

Other mentions..

Then Jesus *said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, a serve Him only.

And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's Son!"

And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.

Jesus *said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.

For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

I think we're best not delving into worship unless everyone wants to, because that's not worship. It involves sacrifice and no judean would recognize simply giving up time or 'treasure' as a sacrifice.
