From personal experience, I know the Canadians are vaccine buffs (Covid era visit). And as an article of faith, its medical system is vastly superior to ours. So it goes without saying that their measles cases should be miniscule, if there are any at all, right?

Wrong.

Even though the US has 8.3x the population of Canada, Canada has 3x the number measles cases. Weird, huh?

Even weirder, Ontario requires vaccination of children to attend school, yet has had 2300 measles this year, vs 700 for ignorant, capitalist red state Texas. Huh

I took measles to cover the spread in this matchup.

Alberta is the hotbed of the outbreak, with the highest number of cases per capita. And it's notorious for its widespread anti-vax sentiments.

Canada is somewhat the opposite of the US in terms of the vaccine political divide. Historically anti-vax sentiment in the US clustered in affluent coastal liberal populations especially on the West Coast. In Canada it's always been much more of a rural conservative phenomenon.

With respect to Ontario, the biggest issue is the huge immigrant population. Canada has gotten pretty lax on vaccine requirements for immigrants and they currently rely on immigration for their workforce and to maintain their population. 70% of cases in Ontario are in first generation immigrants or their children.

It also appears that the Ontario outbreak started out in a Mennonite community after a large Mennonite gathering in New Brunswick.

Seems like the special sauce for a measles outbreak is Mennonite communities+vaccine resistance

Look, our situation certainly isn't great, but no freaking way is theirs better than ours. We have the best medical care in the world. Out population is sick as hell, but that's largely due to lifestyle choices not quality of medical care

There are 25,000 Mennonites in Alberta. Alberta had a population of 3.5 million in 2010. It has a population of 5 million today. Mennonites might have been the kindling but the spread was caused by the 40% increase in population largely made up of unvaccinated international migration.

Similar issues will impact Western healthcare systems for the foreseeable future.
