It's a great story! You may want to provide some context so the thread doesn't get locked.

Thanks for posting that.

My uncle, class of '42, was a Marine aviator flying off of Guadalcanal. He, too, is MIA. The Marine Corps asked me for a DNA sample about 6 months ago, giving me some wild hope. The lengthy timeline summarized in the posted article may mean that the delay isn't necessarily negative.

Just curious but do they use a 48 star flag for these honors at the grave? I would think either would be appropriate but I always loved that flag.

Why would this thread get locked?

In general to keep from this board turning into premium that has thread after thread of worthless post

It's also to prevent dropping a link and disappearing or trolling.

In this case the mods may just let it go since this isn't trolling nor a controversial topic.

As far as I know, the current US flag is used for all military funerals. It was for my grandfather (WWI) and my father and uncle (WWII).

Great story.

When we were staying in Baydeux, France in 2018 a developer uncovered two German soldiers who were killed on or right around D-Day. They were in a machine gun position on a hill and Allied fire apparently caused a landslide that smothered them.

There were honor guards present from both France and Germany as well as the US and UK when the remains were returned to the German Army. It was really moving the level of respect shown across all sides.
