This was a long overdue. I'm glad to see this reckoning. I still doubt they will make the changes necessary to succeed.

When a liberal "journalist" loses their job, an angel gets it wings.

Quote:

The Washington Post is laying off one-third of its staff in the newsroom and other departments, a brutal blow at one of journalism's most legendary brands.

...

"The Washington Post is taking a number of difficult but decisive actions today for our future, in what amounts to a significant restructuring across the company," a Post spokesperson said in a statement.

While a small number of staffers will be reassigned to the Features department to cover sports as a "cultural phenomenon," the traditional sports desk and its specialized coverage have been shuttered.

Known Layoffs and Impacted Staff

The paper notified employees of their status via email today. While the full list of names is still emerging, the following individuals have confirmed their departures or were specifically cited in early reports regarding the desk's closure:

Barry Svrluga: The longtime sports columnist confirmed the department's closure via social media and reported on the executive editor's internal announcements.

Neil Greenberg: Reported to be among the staff departures as the desk was dismantled.

Sports Desk Staff: Roughly 45 employees were told to stay home today and were informed their roles had been eliminated in their current form.

Newsroom-Wide Layoffs
Beyond the sports desk, other confirmed departures and shuttered areas include:

Caroline O'Donovan: Amazon and technology reporter.

Nicole Asbury: Education reporter covering Maryland.

Emmanuel Felton: Race and ethnicity reporter.

Books Section: Entirely eliminated.

Post Reports Podcast: Suspended indefinitely.

The Washington Post Guild is currently tracking these departures and has stated it "vehemently opposes" the cuts.

A certain poster should be along soon to claim that the NYT and others will just swoop in and hire these laid off journalists because that's just how it works out there.

Not a WaPo fan at all, but I have noticed the slant has been reigned in a little. I think Bezos is pressuring them to ease up because AMZN is so exposed to government contracts.

Like everything else liberals have ruined journalism. They've ruined literally almost every profession. We have politics in every ****ing thing these days. And most of what they say is lies.

If you read any article by a liberal organization and many of the news ones are they always start off challenging Trump saying he was lying saying the Republicans are lying and then can't back up their statements.

Objectivity is gone. They don't report anymore they give their opinions. And they're usually wrong.

The whole conspiracy theory stuff that they claim is out there almost every bit of it has been proven true.

We've talked about this before, but one of the biggest self-inflicted wounds for big city newspapers was hiring young reporters straight out of the Ivy League or other prestige schools.

In the old days, you started out at a small-town paper and worked your way up. Along the way, you learned the consequences of making mistakes, not checking facts or otherwise not being fair to sources. And you usually worked for grizzled, irritable editors who taught you how to report and write accurately.

Most importantly, you spent your formative years outside the northeast liberal bubble and learned how people in the heartland live, work and think.

That all went by the wayside. Why hire someone from Nebraska, Indiana or even Texas when you could get some Ivy League hotshot with an axe to grind?

Meanwhile, the young reporters with the polished credentials believed they were there to change the world, not report the facts. And they took over the newsrooms.

Journalism has always had a liberal slant. But in the past 20 years, it slipped right off the edge into insanity.

I think in a lot of ways putting a political bias on topics was a desperate measure to "stay relevant". There are just many/better places to get a lot of this info (either with or without bias) that even that couldn't save them anymore.

He announced last year that they were no longer going to announce editorial recommendations for political candidates and quit doing some other subjective practices.

Most of these current moves are simply a function of the long and ongoing automation of news. Zero reason for the WaPo to have sports at all considering the proliferation of apps that do everything they are doing for 100th of the cost.

WaPo lasted as long as it has because they were the first big paper to build digital infrastructure for their own product and services which they then monetized by selling to other papers. That was always a revenue stream with a built in endgame because the overall automation of the industry was only going to continue to eat away at traditional news.

Lol. Nothing about this looks awful to normal people. It's the media.

Also, every business in America does or has been doing this for decades. Nothing about this is unusual or new. Where was Chuck Todd when the internet gutted papers 20+ years ago? Just like AI and the proliferation of self-service tech is doing this time around.

I remember when Katharine Graham died. The press treated it like a State funeral.

The press itself has become the main character in all of their stories now.

And they want us to pay for the privilege of reading that?

No thank you.
