Sorry your First Amendment rights are not absolute.

Looks like Welsh tried to cover for her by changing the course number and anyone who disagrees with her is "uninformed".

Months after Texas A&M fired a professor over a gender identity lesson, she is suing the university, alleging administrators knowingly violated her free speech and due process rights to appease political critics.

Quote:

She is asking a judge to declare that she did not violate any law or university policy by teaching about gender identity and "was, instead, terminated for exercising her academic freedom guaranteed under the First Amendment."

From the lawsuit:
Quote:

34. Dr. McCoul's department head presented Dr. McCoul with three options: (1) teach
the course as planned; (2) change her syllabus to meet the student's demands; or (3) teach a
different class altogether.

35. Dr. McCoul elected to teach the course as planned because teaching a different course would not be feasible given the semester was to start in a matter of days; nor would it be academically honest to change the course content to satisfy the uninformed whims of one student who wasn't even enrolled in the course.

36. Dr. McCoul's department head supported this choice, confirming her "complete support for [Dr. McCoul] and the content of her class".

37. A few days later, however, Dr. McCoul's department head told her that President Welsh determined she was not to teach Young Adult Literature that fall; instead, Dr. McCoul would teach ENGL 394, "Studies in Genre," the "genre" being young adult literature.

38. Dr. McCoul did not argue or otherwise resist this decision. In a matter of days, TAMU made this operational change, the students enrolled in the Young Adult Literature course were notified of the course number change, and all but one re-enrolled in ENGL 394.

What part of the first amendment covers "academic freedom"?

The university, regardless of whether it is public or not, has 100% authority to say what can and can be taught.

If she had been holding a lecture on her own time about whatever leftist cause de jour she was into and then fired for it, that would be a 1st Amendment issue. The exception to that would be if she broke the law while doing so such as threating the President, or calling for some group to go on a rampage of mass murder.

Being fired for refusing to follow the law on what can and cannot be taught; not protected speech.

You have to love these ivory tower liberals. Her argument is basically just because she is paid to teach a course by the school they can't tell her what she can teach.

She has all the free speech she wants, she just doesn't have the right to be paid to say anything she wants. If the company or school that pays her doesn't like what she is saying they have no obligation to keep her as an employee. Amazing this concept is lost on some people, the level of entitlement is insane. I would also bet anything she loves cancel culture for anyone who says or does anything she doesn't like because they are "hateful" for disagreeing with her.

She didn't get fired for her speech, she got fired because her curriculum became illegal. If you have nothing to teach, sounds like you don't have a job.

What I don't understand is that if what she was teaching was so good, why can't she just go get a job somewhere else and move on with her life.

#35. "Not feasible"--- sounds lazy as hell. Give me a text book you want me to teach and Ill be ready to teach.. She just didnt want NOT to teach course. Burn some midnight oil if you want your job.
If it is the principle of the thing for her-- hell, quit! I wouldnt work for a University who would make me teach that tripe. We dont owe her a damn living.

Well, today in WWII history we are going to teach you how to construct a gas chamber so that you can commit genocide, just like the Nazi's did.

Telling me I can't teach that in my WWII class is an affront to my academic freedom.

Exactly. I was trying to think of a suitable analogy, but that works.

Can a Structural Engineering prof claim 1st Amendment rights to teach about the use of magnets and magic in holding steel frames together? The use of burning sage to predict the weather in a Meteorology class?

Dr Melissa McCoul was fired because her gender identify lesson violated President Donald Trump's executive order that there are only two genders. The First Amendment covers Dr McCoul's right to free speech, but her idea of "academic freedom" is ridiculous. Modern liberals, including many university professors, have an insane level of entitlement. I hope a judge dismisses her lawsuit against the Texas A&M University System, the nine regents, Chancellor Glenn Hegar, Welsh, interim President Tommy Williams and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs James Hallmark.
