3 Weeks After Final Interview

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Recently, I went through 4 rounds of interviews. 3 via teams and the last was in person. The company flew me to their office to interview with the VPs. They said they would have a decision the following week. I asked them to let me know one way or the other, but I haven't heard anything from them. I emailed hr and hiring manager 2 weeks after but they haven't responded. They were very responsive throughout interview process. I've never had this happen to me after a final interview, especially one that they flew me down for (and an interview I did well in)
I'm assuming I didn't get it but was hoping for some common courtesy. Anyone else have this happen to them? It seems pretty unprofessional.

Could be a million things. So many levels of approvals and admin stuff to get anyone hired at a large company. But my guess is you were the backup candidate and they're waiting on the top one to either decide or clear the pre-employment screening before they tell you anything

I agree this is frustrating Brian. It has happened to me twice in the past. I would agree that you likely did not get the job and their could be several reasons why they haven't let you know. It doesn't make it any less frustrating, but I've learned to give others grace.

The unfortunate reality is this has basically become the new normal.

HR / hiring has gotten to the point that in many cases its obvious they have no understanding of the roles they now have too much power to gate keep for and even less ability to be professional throughout the process. People can blame it on AI, but that's just an excuse as it ultimately falls on HR. And they generally think they're doing an awesome job. The worst part is it's not going to change until we get back to hiring managers controlling the process.

At a minimum, they should be communicating with you.

I've this happen multiple times, specifically in 2009 when the economy was very turbulent.

I felt I was about to get an offer when the hiring manager went dark on me. He finally called me on a Sunday afternoon. He indicated the company had made some internal organizational changes and he wasn't sure if the position would remain with him. Ultimately, it did not and he wanted to call me to let me know the new hiring manager's name. I asked if the new guy was going to maintain the current candidate pool and he said the guy was planning to open things back up. He went dark because he couldn't give me any indication there were changes being made before their Earnings announcement.

You might check to see if the company is on a Fiscal calendar. March may be the end of their Fiscal Year and their Earnings may be pending.

I've also seen it where the pay band for a position was lower than would accommodate me and the hiring manager was in the process to get additional budget allocation for the position.

In both cases, I ended the process and withdrew.

Last possible scenario that I've run into is, they were making an offer to another candidate and holding me in the event the other candidate didn't accept.

It could just be final approvals are slow. I hired a guy that HR was just slow-rolling the approval. Ultimately hired the guy, but it took a month longer than it needed to.

Best of luck.

Need to find out if their first choice will take the job and are negotiating with them?

Recently had this happen where it seemed like they ghosted me. It wasn't as long as yours but they eventually responded and let me know they had gone with someone else and I was "really close" so I know I was not communicated with while they negotiated all of that etc.

Depending on industry, I'm seeing lots of hiring freezes implemented, so could be they were trying to get you through before but ran out of time. Regardless, they should tell you, but we generally have a low opinion of most HR people for a reason ...

Happened to me twice the last 6 months. It is amazing the amount of ghosting now. It is pretty much the new normal I fear.

It has happened to me more times than I can count in the last two years.

I am a seasoned leader and executive. Be honest and tell me it's not a good fit if it isn't. I'll do the same. You don't have to tell me why. I ALWAYS let every candidate know for every position I recruit for. It's just classy, good manners, and the right thing to do.

I've been ghosted in about 80-90% of the time I've had an interview (if I didn't get the job). You hear nothing. Send a damn email. It's not that difficult.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Its threads like this that make me have no sympathy for companies whose employees leave them in the dust without notice.

We have strayed so far from the days where your work treated you like a human being and like family.

If you want my advice OP, and I know it sucks because you probably need the job, but this is a blessing. Any company that acts like this is not one you want to work for.

People are pansies and afraid to deliver bad news. So they avoid it altogether. I wouldn't want to work for anyone like that. Work isn't always rainbow and sunshine. That employer seems weak in my opinion. Don't tell me what I want to hear. Tell me the truth.

I'd second this sentiment. It may not look like it now, when you might be desperate or bleeding money between jobs. But when you find the spot that pursues you, you'll look back and feel better about the journey.

Keep your head up and just remember your worth.

I love when your own internal HR or internal hiring manager ghost you when you ask a simple question. I get it that you may not respond to external candidates. But, come on, we are on the same team right? How about a little professional courtesy within our own organization. You never know, someday down the road the tables may be reversed and you are looking to me to answer a simple question concerning how your interview went with me.

When a candidate makes it past the initial screen and the first interview and moves forward, he/she deserves at least an email. "Thanks for your time; we've decided to go in a different direction."

Ghosting someone who has been through three or four rounds is beyond lame. I would be embarrassed to be involved in a hiring process like that.

It's changed so much over the years. Professionalism is gone and I hate to say it but even I am now a very much selfish job seeker. Don't make me jump through hoops. Don't make me take a 3 hour personality test for a low paying job. You can spot the bad companies to work for a mile away by how they treat the interview process. I think it's a different world for people who haven't shifted around a lot (Mr Diesel included). It's tough out there and you just have to look out for you. Period

As a hiring manager, I always tell candidates that I don't believe in ghosting….so they will hear back from me either way. But I also tell them in advance that if they do receive bad news from me that I can't discuss why they weren't selected so please don't ask.

This arrangement has always worked out well for all involved and I highly recommend it.

People are chickens when it comes to telling you no, especially when they know they have led you on. In my industry, this is very very common. It's common in sales in general. Early in my career, if someone ghosted me like that, I would incessantly hound them until they returned an answer. Phone and email can be blocked. Use a Google voice or someone else's number to call. If you can get them on the phone then they typically won't just hang up, they have to say something. It should be easier when working with a business. I simply can't allow ghosting.

My wife interviewed with a Fortune 500 company about a year+ ago... Both rounds of interviews went great. She was surprised to never hear back and had to track them down to confirm no offer.

About half year later - via a friend of a friend who works in their HR-- wife came down to the final two, but the other candidate had cheaper salary requirements (based upon current jobs) and they went with that candidate. They actually liked the wife better, but were too cheap to make the higher offer.

Up until then my wife was frustrated why she wasn't offered the position and what she did. Still annoying they didn't have the courtesy to follow up with her promptly.

This is a solid post, but just to be clear - your HR is not on your team. They are on your company's team, and don't ever forget it.

People have a fundamental misunderstanding of what HR does.

More internally than externally. They are never going to give an opinion about anything, their opinion weighs little to nothing in the process anyway, unless they are telling you "we have some diversity metrics we're behind on.

I run most panel interviews for a F200 company. They used to think they needed HR on those. I quit inviting them, because they could add nothing to our interview process, weren't attuned to make the choices (don't know every individual organization), and were never included in our thought process.

So at that level- I'd work up a recommendation, get it signed off by CFO, who would then forward to HR the approved recommendation. It never mentioned anything about the declined candidates. And unless we were specifically focused on a development need for a high-performing individual, that we were choosing to accept or pass on, HR would have no idea. Just doing what they're told.

People think HR has a lot of involvement with these things. They don't.

If you have an external recruiter, they CAN. Generally more connected with the hiring manager, who can speak more freely with them about who's in the mix, what exactly is being looked for, where the process sits, etc.

Unless you are good friends with upper level people internally, you're going to get little to nothing (and that's smart on HRs part), and they aren't going to tell you exactly what they know about the process (even after the fact). Unless you are the one in charge of hiring, then you can get more from them if you're navigating approval through upper levels.
