Howdy,

I am currently a commercial analyst for a major pipeline company in downtown Houston and have long term plans with my wife of building a house and raising a family on some family property in Brenham. Any Ags ever make that commute? What is the job market like in Brenham? I studied Economics with a minor in Business and am open to new roles. I am hoping to work something out with my current company that would allow remote work, but the further away we get from covid the less likely it seems.

Just wanted to see if anyone had advice. Thanks

No real advice. But when I last lived in Houston 2006 and while I was in school at TAMU Galveston, I made the drive to College Station and to my parents and spent plenty of time on 290.

Personally, I can't imagine making that a daily or even couple days a week commute. I'm sure it could easily be 1.5 to 2 hours each direction.

I have a coworker that lives in Bellville. We're in Westchase now but up until a year ago our office was in the Galleria.

The Bellville to Galleria commute for him was about an hour in the morning and an hour 15 minutes in the afternoon. He did leave his house at 5 am and leave work around 3:30/4.

Probably add 20-30 minutes more for downtown vs. Galleria. Then plus/minus for whatever the difference between Bellville and Brenham. I do know he would take 10 into the office in the morning and the 290 toll home after work.

I commuted from the Woodlands to the southern edge of IAH. That's like 20 miles as the crow flies. That commute made me hate life and was an hour+ each way.

What you're asking about here, I couldn't fathom.

Just doesn't seem feasible long term to drive from Brenham to downtown Houston 5 days a week for work. I drive from the Woodlands to memorial park area and hate life. Can't help you at all on the job market there but you might also consider CS or Bryan for work if you d move that direction.

I drive from the Magnolia/Montgomery area to downtown three days a week. It's slightly over an hour taking hot lanes or tollways. I drive sometimes and take the bus sometimes. I don't mind it. It is my opportunity for quiet time alone.

I couldn't imagine driving from Brenham. My commute is about 45 miles. Brenham is 75 miles. That would probably be over two hours each way.

I couldn't even imagine. I commuted from Spring to NRG area and it was about 90 mins in the morning. If I left the office between 3:30-7:00 it was about 90 mins going home. It got to where I wouldn't leave the office until 8 pm or later just to avoid traffic. I did that for about 3 years before I finally had enough.

I commute from Bellville to downtown 3 days a week. I take the bus from the Katy park and ride which means I am not actually driving the whole way and my company pays for it. If they decide to go to 4 or 5 days in the office it'll be rough. Usually leave my house at 4:45 and the office at 3:30ish.

There are a few manufactures in Brenham that you could look at. Or Blue Bell maybe.

It's a life altering type of commute. ~80 miles

Only way to keep your sanity IMO is to hit the road at 4:45am and leave the office by 3pm. And sometimes that affects availability to peers and bosses unless the entire office allows for that type of work schedule.

I worked for Caldwell Companies and would either commute to College Station or Cypress from my home in Brenham. The commute, ultimately, took away time from family.
We wanted to stay in Brenham so decided to start our own homebuilding company here.
I know a few other Ags that live in Brenham and commute and seem to not mind.

I lived near old Hempstead on our farm and worked in the energy corridor and did that drive for 12 years. No problem. It just depends on how bad you want it to work. I got it to the office around 9, ate lunch at my desk usually, and was in my car heading out at 4-4:30pm at the latest. You just need to make your employer understand the situation.

We have been in Chappell Hill for about a year. My wife drives to downtown Houston 2-3 times a week. She commutes outside of peak traffic time and it takes her about 1hr15min. Feel free to PM.
