My prior company eliminated the division I was working in, and now I find myself in the job market.

I'm not having a ton of success getting responses from applications, feels like I'm sending my resume into a black hole without much feedback. I did engage with a career coach that was sponsored by my last company, got my resume in a good spot (or so I thought), and feel like I have enough experience to at least get some interest. In addition, I just finished my Masters from Georgia Tech in May, but not feeling like it's helping much.

I'm casting a decently wide net in my job search - applying for roles I want to move into while leveraging skills learned during my Masters program, applying for roles that I am definitely qualified for and are in line with my recent past, and even applying for jobs I am overqualified for and will likely come with a lower salary than I'm shooting for.

What gives? I feel like the market is oversaturated, and not sure how to get a leg up. Starting the process now of engaging with the A&M career services center and the Georgia Tech career center. I don't feel like there is any advantage to using LinkedIn - never get any responses from DMs or from applying to LinkedIn job postings.

Are there any tools/tips on getting in front of someone? I am using different job search engines that are basically a live feed of jobs, so I apply within the first hour or two of posting. I have had some success when dealing with 3rd party recruiters, but how do I engage with them directly rather than applying for a job that they post?

What type of analytics (or data science) is in your background, and what are you going for now?

I have a background in GTM analytics and was reorg'd out in June - very much company related as they were going into a very fragmented customer base and the big wins were just not there even on a long sales cycle. The space is saturated and down for sure, especially in tech.

If it were me and I was in a similar circumstance, I would consider focusing my attention on the companies that supplement what it is you do.

So much of my scope (corp finance) has moved from doing the analytics myself to be human-in-the-loop for the analytics that is now being completed by ML/AI.

I would just guess (I don't know) that data analytics...particular data analysts... are becoming persona non grata as companies look at allocation of labor and what can potentially be done increasingly by software. That being said, you know the process and what it should look like, if you shift toward being the expert on showing other teams/companies how they apply the new tools to their process, your value increases greatly.

That might be where you're looking already but hopefully it could help in your search.

Is there a big difference between your undergrad and grad degrees, and what you have been doing and what you want to do?

What industry or industries have you been in, and are you looking for same industry roles or different ones?

Are you applying to remote only roles? If so, its extremely competitive to get these remote positions now, and the chances are your resume will never get seen among the 1000+ other candidates.

The key is to focus on local in office positions. There is less competition for these roles. And be one of the first to apply after the role gets posted.

Not a huge difference between undergrad and grad degrees. Biggest challenge is progressing from data analyst to data scientist - there is definitely overlap but the required professional experience seems to be the barrier regardless of my masters. However, as I said above I am not limiting myself in my job search, rather widening to other data-related roles that could also fit.

Prior experience is in hospitality/golf membership based company and financial services (banking/loans). Again, not limiting myself to a specific industry. In a perfect world, when asked I mention I'd love to get into the sports betting/gaming industry or back into something sports adjacent. I had an offer from Harley-Davidson back in 2023 that I'm kicking myself over not accepting.

Not applying to remote only roles - completely fine with something in-office. I'm in Houston, have been working remote the past 5 years, there are pros and cons to both.

I feel like data science had its moment and it's kind of passed. Not trying to say the roles aren't out there, but centralized teams with lots of positions to fill is not as common as 5-10 years ago.

Partially what I am worried about. I have been looking into more PM type positions - I have the knowledge to know what I'm talking about with the tech teams and the ability to build the relationships with leadership teams and get everyone aligned.

Have you considered (or applied for) product analyst roles? Very tough to break in as a PM without PM experience. Buddy was trying to go from a PM at a tooling company to a tech PM, and it was very rough. He eventually gave up. Product analyst to PM happens.

What was the issue with the HD offer?

Good suggestion. Will look into product analyst roles.

Nothing wrong with the HD offer, but it was one of 3 offers at the time and a significantly lower salary than job I took. The job I accepted ended up being completely different than what was promised during the interview process, all promises/guarantees were thrown out within the first month.
