Just wanted to see this boards opinion on a good .22 semi auto to buy. Just looking for a cheap gun to shoot and have some fun.

But I dont want too cheap of a gun. Some quality to it now, as I plan on putting a lot of rounds through it.

I like the mosquitos look but have heard mixed reviews. I have heard good things on ruger and browning guns but they are kinda ugly looking. I know that shouldnt matter as much as quality which is why I am trying to gather thoughts on here about a nice semi auto 22 pistol.

Love my ruger. Sucker is reliably and accurate as hell. It is a SOB to clean, however.

I have a ruger mkII and love it. The mkII/III are affordable(unless you get a tricked out one) and well made. There are a lot of aftermarket bells and whistles as well.

Walther P22 might be worth checking out as well, have heard good things.

I second the Ruger, just be VERY careful when you strip it to clean it. They can be a real pain to re-assemble. Or just do like my brother, after he learned how hard they are to strip and clean, he just quit cleaning his. It has now fired several thousand rounds through it with no cleaning, and no problems.

I like my Walther P22, it comes stock with a threaded barrel. So you get an adapter, and put a suppressor on easily. I got for 314 from Champions.

You're probably going to discover that the "combat" type .22 LR pistols such as the Sig Mosquito and Walther P22 are not as reliable or accurate as the Browning Buckmark or Ruger MKII. The reason being they are locked breech firearms where the slide must cycle to operate. Unfortunately, there just isn't quite enough oomph in the .22 LR cartridge to cycle the slide reliably, so they often jam. The blowback designs are typically more reliable and more accurate.

YMMV.

I like the Browning Buckmark a lot. The best factory trigger I've felt and just a solid gun overall. I've shot a few different Rugers and like the Buckmark better.

I had a friend buy two of the sig mosquitos. Both had the same feeding problem.

The "bolt" face would get dry and the ammo would not slide up causing a failure to feed. The cartridge wasnt hitting the feed ramps. It was catching on the flat bolt face.

Once we kept that bolt face consistently lubed (approximately every 50 rounds or so), they seemed to function fine.

i dont know if that has been a consistent problem with the mosquitos, but for the two he bought at the same time, it was.

just throwing that out there.

I like both the Ruger and Browning. Both are excellent and accurate. I have no probs with either. I grew shooting a Ruger as that is what my dad owned. I have the Browning Buckmark which I bought as a younger man. I have had it for about 15 years. Still shoots and looks as good as the day I bought it.

The cheapest reliable and surprisingly accurate .22 semi is the S&W 22A, which can be had for around $230. Easily as accurate and reliable as a Buckmark or MKIII. Trigger isn't as good as the other two, but only by a hair. Easiest of the .22 semi's to strip. But they are rather homely.

The Browning Buckmark has the best factory trigger of all the common .22's. Accurate, and has a nice grip size that fits the great majority of people. You need a tool to strip, but overall easy to manage. The cheaper ones can be found under $300. Only comes with one mag tho.

The Ruger MKIII is built like a tank, and will last many generations. A PITA to strip, but you will get used to it. Just don't ever loose the directions. Accurate and reliable - probably the most reliable when dirty. Trigger isn't as nice as the BM's, but not bad at all, and can easily be made better with aftermarket parts.

The Beretta Neos is the 2nd easisest pistol to strip. Smallish grip, the angle of which doesn't fit everyone. Trigger is blah, but it works well, and is fairly accurate. 2nd cheapest of the four.

I generally don't recommend the Walther P22 or Sig because of their spotty reliability, and their less than desirable (for me, anyway) accuracy. Too much money for what you get, but they are fun to shoot. They can't be beat if you are going to install a can.

Best bang for the buck is the 22A. Best overall IMO is the Buckmark. Best to get one of each of them, since it's not possible to have too many handguns.....

Thanks for the input.

Everything mentioned about the Mosquito I had read about last night as well. So that gun is eliminated

the Walther is an intriguing gun but it is pretty much eliminated but hanging on by a thread. holding out hope of some other positives reviews

Im kind of favoring the buckmark but from y'alls input and others it seems you cant go wrong with ruger or the browning. they are ugly guns though, but why spend money on something unreliable and not accurate? the cleaning thing is making me feel uneasy and still undecided...

Thanks for the input. This board is the best

I have a Ruger (well two), a Buckmark and a P22.

The only thing worse than the trigger on the P22 is the sights. A target pistol it is not...

Get the Buckmark.

are you set on semi-autos or would you consider a revolver.

one of the most fun 22s I have shot was a sweet little ruger single six.

I guess it all depends on what your want to do with the weapon you buy.

The ruger and buckmark are both good pistols.

I shoot the Walther because I run a can (suppressor) on it.

I would like my next .22 to be a supressed MkII.

I have no experience with the other guns mentioned, but I once owned a buckmark and later sold it. I have regretted selling it ever since. I will buy another one someday. It's probably the most fun gun I have owned. Can't say enough good things about it.

I have a couple brownings and rugers. I like the buckmarks the most. I am not a fan of the mosquito. I understand the firing pins are prone to breakage.

Also...I am embarrassed to say this, but I had to have a smith put my ruger back together and teach me to disassemble. A "bag gun".

I also love my revolvers. Single six is awesome. I have a taurus model 94, but trigger is so-so. If you go the revolver route there is only one choice, the single six.

Another one for the Ruger. I have really enjoyed mine. They are kinda a b*tch to put back together until you learn how. There is a good youtube video on it as well as on their website.

You can't go wrong with either the Buckmark or the Ruger. I researched them for a year, shot a few, talked to gun people, etc. It was about 50/50.

I ended up with the Buckmark, because it was what Academy had in stock that day. Also, they tend to run $50-$70 less vs the equivalent Ruger.

Both have healthy aftermarket for parts, so you can always trick them out later.

But a suppressed MKIII makes for such a fun time

Get a ruger single six and then a 10/22 combo.
