Shoot twice and then throw it at your attacker.

I've never fired one but from what I've heard (by quite a few people) they are ugly, heavy, not ergonomic, but reasonably reliable if that's all you can afford. I believe they are blowback operated so recoil will be more than others. You won't find many people speak well of them and if you can afford a better gun, I'd save my money and do that, but sometimes you can't and I believe hi-points fill that niche.

No I've never talked to anyone about them. I actually found a hi-point forum that gives a review of the 9mm carbine. I'm surprised there is a following but to each his own. It looks like the carbine is built from the pistol frame and has the same internals. Ugly as hell but hey.

I've shot the 9mm pistol. It had a good bit of recoil, isn't ergonomic at all. That being said we shot about 150rnds through it, no malfunctions. I VASTLY prefer my taurus though....

I have no experience shooting them, but I've never heard anything good about them (except that they're dirt cheap if you consider that good).

This thread actually inspired me to search youtube for a torture test on these things (pistols). Sure enough some dudes do all kinds of awful things trying to get one to explode (which many people think they do, but there aren't many documented cases). They even drive a bolt into the barrel and shoot it and it blows the bolt out and has a bulge in the barrel, but doesn't come apart. It seems like they are reliable enough. If they could just do something about the god-awful looks of the thing they might sell more of them. They are made in the USA and have a lifetime warranty. If you buy one and shoot it a while, let us know how it is...

I like learning about guns, even if they're cheap and ugly.

I have shot a couple of them and had no problems. Accuracy was pretty good as well. .380 and 9mm were the two I fired.

I have a Hi-Point 995TS and I have never had any problems with it. The carbine continues to fire all day long, without any jams or misfires. If money wasn't an option, I would have purchased an AR without question. For $220, you can get a nice target carbine to take to the range. I think most of the people that talk bad about the carbines are just gun snobs who have NO experience with them. That link they posted actually has some pretty good information with really good reviews from independent sources. As for the pistol, I have no experience on it, and I am not going to make an ignorant comment about it.

As for ugliness, I will agree that the first 995 was very ugly looking. The newer 995TS actually has a more tactical look. Some people like the new style, and some still find them ugly. But you're right, to each his own.

FIL has the 9mm pistol. It is a huge POS. Took him an hour to qualify with it. Jams, double feeds, and stovepipes after every other trigger pull. I think it's pretty much useless.

Like I said before, I wouldn't own one but I wouldn't badmouth someone who did. I don't know what circumstances existed for them to buy it. My grandpa's favorite saying: "to each his own". From what I understand though, the reputation for exploding is not correct. While I'm not a fan of these guns myself, I don't like it when rumors about weapons of any make are spread by people who have not used them, or not witnessed the failure firsthand.

Here is the youtube video of someone driving a steel bolt into the end of the barrel and firing it. If there were any conditions for it to explode, I'd think it'd be here. Besides a slight barrel bulge, the gun is fine. I'd love to find a video of one exploding as people ask me about guns all the time and I try my best to inform them about the facts without injecting my own personal feelings or bias.

I would honestly spend $300-$315 and buy a Taurus P95. Cheapest gun I would buy to rely on.
