Anyone have recommendations for a place to get chicken coop for 6-10 hens? Don't want to break the bank, but don't want to repurchase in a year or two. I'm located in Montgomery, so the closer to there the better.

I don't know what "break the bank" is for you, but I'm cheap and I think pre-fabbed chicken coops are crazy expensive. We ended up just building one ourselves.

But….I'd check Tractor Supply.

I can't help you with your direct question, but I got chickens a year ago. I built a basic sloped roof wooden storage shed as a chicken coop because I wanted to have something useful in the event I decided chickens weren't for me.

The pre-built coops are so expensive I'd bet you could buy a small shed and use that.

Facebook marketplace but this is the wrong time of year to be looking.

We got one of the bigger ones at Tractor Supply almost a year ago and it has held up really well. I added the shade cover, an automatic door, and a 15 gallon water system, all of which makes egg farming really painless.

6-10 birds is going to require something bigger than TSC carries. If they do, it won't be cheap. If you are going to free range them every day then the coop can be much smaller. I think the best and cheapest option will be to build yourself. When I built one many years ago, I would go through developing neighborhoods and ask any person there "donde esta el basura?" And then "puedo tener esto". The wander was always yes and I'd back my truck up and dumpster dive. One dumpster will provide most of what you need. I got full length dimensional lumber, siding, even partial boxes of nails and screws, windows…TODO ESO!

If you go this route, and you aren't too far, and timing works out, I can get all the roofing you need if you want shingles. And if I can't help you, ask a roofing PM at a build if you can have the leftovers. Everything that is opened is going in the trash when they are done. Just sayin'.

Don't overthink it. I had never committed to building anything wood related up until last year. Bought a plan off Etsy for 20$ and proceeded to just follow that. It works well, but I don't think this is the last coop I'll ever build.

Repurpose something that is meant to be outdoors. I saw someone repurpose an old plastic water tank that had a small crack. Put a hatch door in the bottom and laid it on its side, cut out windows and put wire over the holes for ventilation. Stacked milk crates inside as the nesting boxes. Worked great and easy to clean, just sprayed it out with a water hose.

Mine is very similar. Just a 4x4c4 plywood box with an angled tin roof elevated off the ground on 2 foot legs it had a side egg box, a cleaning access door, and a bird access door. Very basic. I used repurposed old used dog kennel panels to create a protected chicken yard adjoining it. Added a suspended netting on top to protect from hawks.

A buddy of mine builds them in/around the Houston area. Might be out of your budget but should be able to get a free quote for comparison.
