Howdy, yes I am an OLD, but I can do lots of tech stuff, not geeky good, but more than OK. I felt this way until Tuesday when I made the mistake of upgrading my iPhone XR7 to iPhone 17, just plain 17. At that point the sky feel in on me. Wow, what a MESS!!! A bunch of my apps including Verizon, which is where I upgraded, had a hidden lock I did not know about. That is, they see a new phone and shut you out for 3 to 7 days, a security measure in case of stolen phone, nice I guess, but I had no idea this would happen. No Gmail, no YouTube, my financial app, lost all the maps in my Roborock vacuum.

Also, another cute trick, they no longer charge with a USB A to Lighting cable. Require now USB C to USB C. And to add insult to injury the charger is a separate purchase, no charger with the new phone, a cable yes, but no charger. So now you get to purchase a new charger and new cables, how nice!!

So as an OLD this will be my LAST upgrade, it is beyond frustrating!

I'm old enough to still have my original Mac Plus with its printer out in the garage and they were both fully functional when I turned them off years ago.
I feel so much better since about 11 a.m. CT on 20 Jan. 2025

Usb A to Usb C still works fine. The cord they sell you is C to C, but it doesn't matter what the wall side of the cord is, only the phone side.

This shows how addicted we all are to technology.

Sometimes a good digital detox makes me feel better.

I wish everything had USB C charging. I hate having to carry multiple charging cables.

I don't know WTH happened but as of this week on my phone every time I open Safari I have to login to my Google account, Texags, Texas Bowhunter, etc.

Annoying as hell, feel like throwing this damn thing into the dumpster.

El Gato Charro: Howdy, You Sir, are Correct! I am not a geek, but pretty techied up, and that is all fine and dandy until POWER GOES OUT! That is when I find just exactly how terribly reliant we are on electricity! It always makes me wonder what it would be like in all the years before Edison and the light bulb, what an odd and dark time that must have been. I spent two weeks in the house after Harvey hit Rockport with no power. What an odd awful time that was, sure makes you appreciate electricty!

I think about my grandparent's house out in West Texas. They used a windmill to get their water out of the ground and had a root cellar to store vegetables in mason jars.

My grandfather was old enough that he trained mules as a child and that is what they worked the cotton farms with. They had oil lamps and a wood burning stove. It really isn't that many generations ago.

Now most of my preparations are to not lose electricity out at the farm with generators, etc. I rely on electricity and would be in a world of hurt if I had to go one month without it. People like you that have lived through a hurricane or two understand how frail we are as a society.

I've never experienced the lockout thing and we just recently upgraded.

Regarding the charger issue...people have been clamoring forever for Apple to get rid of their stupid lightning cable format and move to normal cable formats. So they did by switching to USB-C. Most people have a magnetic charger or a PC with USB-C so to save some cost they stopped including the wall-wart.

You can get adapters from USB-C to just about any kind of plug. Just carry 1-2 USB C-C cords and a little pouch full of adapters.

I'd it's not broke, don't fix it.
