Howdy, been a strange week, to say the least. So my Gas water heater is 10 years old, just had it inspected and everything is in good shape, no rust, no leaks, no banging when it heats, but it is 10 years old. I ask the plumber to give me a quote for a new one. Wow, did not expect this!!!!

The quote to purchase and install 50 gal, gas water heater, wait for it, $2,775.

I find that outrageous, course it has been 10 years since I got one, but nearly $3,000 for a water heater??? Is this anywhere close to correct, how do folks do it anymore, just live at these prices???

Last one I replaced was $1800-1900 installed and that was 3 years ago (maybe 4). The unit itself was only like $600-800 and if I wasn't convinced I was going to make things way worse by dropping the old tank during removal and cause more than $1000 worth of damage, I would have done it myself.

Unfortunately, everything is expensive now…

Shop around, that's nuts. They're also probably adding an expansion tank and other silliness to get you up to code. I've been pumping up HVAC and plumbers' kids college funds a lot over the last year and even though I've found more reasonably priced guys, their prices are still way more than they were just a few years ago.

We were quoted between $1800-2200. Ended up doing it myself for the price of the heater and new hoses/fittings

Glad I have lots of former students who went into trades and are very reasonable with prices.

Have to replace a shower. $1500 for demoing and putting the new one in and fixing the area below not counting parts.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

$2700 is nuts. Just quoted a 30 gallon for $900. 50 gallon for $1200

Replacing a ground floor water heater is a fairly easy DIY. There is no way I would attempt replacing an attic installed water heater.

Go tankless, we had ours done a couple years back with a unit rated for commercial use and it cost us about $2300...you're dealing with a tradesman who just watched South Park.

Shop around. Maybe consider a handyman type guy.

You will likely get more quotes in that range or more. Seems like plumbers decided a few years ago that they were done with AC guys making all the big money.and pushed their prices through the roof.

A tank water heater installation is usually about one of the easiest installs you can imaging, except for the labor lugging the stupid things around and the unusual situation where a bunch of modifications are needed.

Also, I believe most of the plumber "inspections" of tank water heaters are a scam. They look around the outside. You cannot predict anything from that.

Did you check with Oak Plumbing? Just had them replace all the plumbing on my dock which required them to go underneath, their price was not cheap but pretty fair compared to others I checked.

When I lived in Austin about seven years ago I got quoted $4000 to replace a water heater. I later found out this was a garbage scammy plumbing company that quoted that price. IMO it shouldn't cost more than $2000.

I've replaced several water heaters in my house and a couple of rentals. The gas heater in my house was the hardest as it was in the attic. I left the old water heater in the attic as it was about 50lbs heavier. The electric heaters in the garage were nothing. A few fittings and a dolly and they were done.

I just bought a 50 gallon gas heater 4 months ago, paid $750 for it out the door did all the hookups myself and then paid $250 for a plumber to come out and double check everything. Unless you have to sweat copper it is not hard to hook up flexible gas lines.

A very long time ago when I was a student I worked for a property management company and replaced a water heater that was in the attic of a duplex near campus that was probably built in the 1960's. When I first went up there I saw 2 old water heaters laying up there. The scuttle hole was small enough that I didn't bother taking the old one down that I was working on because in order to get the new one in I had to remove the T&P to gain clearance.. So when I left, there were 3 old water heaters and 1 new one. This was almost 30 years ago, so I can imagine that attic has another 2 or 3 up there because the duplex is still there today.
