I went on our buddy GroupMe months ago asking for Galveston fishing guide recs and one of my buddies, knowing I had not been active on TexAgs in many years, shared a thread recommending Captain Steven Gremillion.

I reached out and booked with him and wanted to share my experience.

Easy, smooth communication and transaction. He was timely and on point. His boat and equipment were all top-notch and fit our needs perfectly. He was friendly and patient and did a great job of filleting our catch.

Mostly, though, he made for a great morning of fishing for my 12-year old son. We've fished a number of times previously, always with guides, but we're still closer to novice than expert. Most of our other guides have been fine, but with kids in particular (we've got 2 older boys that have been previously), guides do too much. I get it - they don't know what kind of client they have and they don't want some fool screwing up their gear. I get it.

But CPT Grem let my son struggle some, if that makes sense. He let him feel some hits but not set the hook. He let him struggle with the fight and even lose a few. And for the first time, I think he appreciated that fishing isn't just about the victory and the dinner that follows, it's about the challenge and the failure that any outdoors adventure requires.

When we got into the car to drive back - after a very cool surprise that is his story to tell, not mine - he told me, "This was the best fishing trip we've ever been on!"

So a tip of the hat to Captain Gremillion for a fabulous day and my highest recommendation for him as a guide. He'll make your day special, especially if you have kids wanting to get on the water. (And just prior to typing this, I see he's working to get another family accommodated down the coast a little. Outstanding!)

Personally, I think this is a crucial part of fishing. Fighting the urge to set the hook, understanding the fish and what is happening, and timing will serve your boy well in the future. A good guide is also a good teacher, in my opinion. Sounds like he's on point!

I'll be scheduling with SGrem for my next trip with the kids. I've heard good things about him.

And I should add, just in case the picture doesn't come out as planned - CPT Grem put us on fish! We caught plenty. We were out on the jetty heading between Galveston Bay and the Gulf and we were pulling in fish left and right. We threw a number of smaller black drum back in addition to those we kept - 2 big redfish, 8 black drum, and 3 sheepshead. We booked a half-day (our nightcap was the WBC - USA! USA!) and had plenty of time left to keep fishing, but we had more than enough in the boat and, I'm embarrassed to say, I'd already gotten sick after fighting my big red and couldn't fully settle again. We got a nice tour of the back side of Galveston Island where CPT Grem gave us an up-close look at Battleship Texas, the offshore drilling museum, Katie's, UTMB (where a number of my partners trained), the old shipwreck, etc etc. It was a really neat way to finish up the trip out.

Again, 5 (star) recommendation!

Ha! Yeah, me too, but it's my story and I get to tell it how I want!

When I was hanging over the side yakking I heard someone whisper, "what a puss." I'm pretty sure it was the voice in my head, but even if it was him or my 12 year old (or all 3 of us) - it was correct!

What a great write up! Very generous. Makes me super happy that it was a memorable time and that I impacted your boy. He was outstanding. I see a lot of kids and he loves being out there. Keep him outdoors! I make more friends than customers and really appreciate getting to know yall. Come back and see me and we will get yall out on the boat again.

Here is what it is like fishing with TexAgs (according to yall) lolol.....

Love this. Learning to let their kids struggle and fail (and through it, grow) is something so many parents in my generation seem to be lacking, and its really hurting our kids, I think.

Thanks for sharing, it really brightened my day.
