Good morning everyone! We are on the island if Kaua'i this week and some very big flood event is moving in. We had planned to do a kayak tour, fishing trip, and explore the National preserve. We already did a boat tour but 2 of our remaining things are canceled already and we expect the fishing trip tomorrow to be canceled.

Anyone that has been here and has some ideas that we could do in place of those, can you throw them at me?

We have 10 small kids with us so anything that would keep them entertained would be best.

When it is raining?

We did our honeymoon there. There is tons of hiking, which may or may not be great if it is raining. We did part of the Na Pali coast trail and also the trail along the ridge of the canyon.

If there isn't lightning or bad winds/surf, you can always snorkel the shallow reefs in Hanalei Bay. Rain won't be a problem if you are underwater.

Hanalei (and the nearby bridges) are often prone to flooding. The north shore is typically not the best place to be during big rain events. Of course, I'm still gun shy from when the whole road closed a few years ago and we had to cancel our vacation. I have no idea how this storm is supposed to shake out. Just saying be careful on the north shore past Princeville.

Good point. I seem to recall a couple of low bridges.

I just saw that Polihale Beach and Ke'e Beach (Haena State Park) are both closed already. I was going to suggest the drier west side (Polihale and the canyon) until I saw that. And If Ke'e is closed, Tunnels may close too. Both of those have good reef protection from waves and I'm not sure where else does (Anini maybe?). I'd be careful going out in the water anywhere else.

So I hope you like hiking in the rain or hotel bars. My kid loved the pool at the Hyatt and at the Hanalei Bay Resort. I enjoyed the bars there back when I could drink.

I was going to suggest Tahiti Nui in Hanalei, but as others have said the bridges going in and out are suspect even in dry conditions. I would not suggest driving around that island at all with the threat of big rains

Hotel bar it is!

Which island has the surplus Axis deer population you can hunt on? Maybe that's an idea?
I'm going to Hawaii in July and want to figure that out too

There are some nice beaches on the southern side that are typically calmer and drier. I would avoid the northern beaches.

Lanai. Although I've seen a few in Kauai north of Waimea Canyon.

My wife just told me we are going to Maui so I did some googling and it seems there is Axis hunting on several islands including Maui! Including goats and hogs. Game on!

Waimea Canyon State Park. You should be able to drive up to some/most of the lookout areas, even in the rain.

Thank y'all for the ideas!

Yeah there is some sort of weather event generating flood warnings, so nearly all of the outdoor trail type things, which I was looking forward to the most, are closed. Like some of you have alluded to, apparently the flash flooding here is really gnarly.

We made the most of it and drove around and looked at what we could see. Then we hung out at the pool, which the kids had a blast with. There was definitely some drinking going on for us adults, as well!

Tomorrow we will figure other things, but will probably do alot of hanging at the pool again, too. It is nice to just relax and not have to worry about anything, in any case. Lemonde from lemons!

I' m in Honolulu this week for vacation. It's a Kona storm. It's all they've been talking about. Supposed to be huge rain event. We fly out early Thursday morning so I'm praying we don't get delayed.

We had just landed in Honolulu when the tsunami warnings started going off in July. It was a nightmare.

Yeah we are sort of considering trying to fly out early. I doubt we do, but the idea has been passed around.

My kids really enjoyed the mountain tubing in Kauai. I would think you could do that rain or shine.

I spent a considerable amount of time attempting to rope one of the wild chickens. I came close a few times but never was successful.

Lived there as a kid.

Spouting Horn, Kilauea Lighthouse to watch for whales, Fern Grotto boat tour, Wailua Falls, Na Pali cliffs, Hanalei Bay, Poipu Beach, Old Town Koloa has some historic sites, as do many towns on Kauai,

The skies cleared and we had a great time today! I just went where the women folk told me to drive. Not sure the names of the things we saw but went waaaaay up into some state park, which was awesome, then saw the spouting horn, ate some spectacular food truck hawaiian shrimp, went to some other waterfall, crossed a swinging bridge, bought a bunch of fruit from some lady with a little roadside orchard. We also saw a ton of wild chickens! Our fishing trip is back on tomorrow so all us boys are pumped. Now time for the torture of family pictures. yay.

There was a pineapple plantation right on the road to Wiamea falls, that had some killer fresh made smoothies from their little tent amidst the fruit field. It was worth the 30 min drive if you are staying in Lahuie or near there.

Don't sleep on the smash burgers and scenery, at Smitty's Smash Burger and their onion rings. I think my son and I ate there about 5 times over the week. Of course it was a 5 min walk from our hotel and the beer was almost frozen. They had a mexican lager brewed in CA, that was absolutely amazing.

We also did a whale watching trip with Capt. Andy's. I have been out with them 2x now, and would never use anyone else for that. Best boats, friendliest crew, and getting to sit in the wheelhouse with the captain made the trip for me.

This thread has some good stuff on it including a post from me but a lot of suggestions are on the Princeville side. Hanalei is a great area if weather permits.

TLDR if you haven't done the Lighthouse I bet the kids would like that. Lots of crazy bird watching there! And the little marketplace area nearby is great for lunch. Have a great time!

You have ten kids? Capture every loose chicken running around on the island to start your own poultry business.
