Would have broke the Texas state record for youth angler sheephead today. It was just over 10 pounds. Unfortunately he was getting a gatorade and I hooked the fish and handed off. I knew that would disqualify it.

Same happened with the state record black drum we caught....it was almost 85 pounds. This woman is my best friend and she is over 6ft tall. I hooked and handed off.

Can't image the fight a 10 lb sheepshead would put up… that's an old looking fish

Are you filling them up with baby turtles before weighing?

We tried but the seepshead mouth is too small to smush the baby turtles into. We used 10mm sockets instead. Its a reasonable place to look for them so figure wouldnt raise any eyebrows.

I thought he had a big red the way it was pulling drag. Another buddy of mine said the same thing. Said that fish looks 50 yrs old. Said it looks like a fake fish. Lol really cool catch.

Curious Grem, I caught a 23 inch sheepshead and I thought it was a monster. How big is that one? Kids looks like it might be 28 or more.

what is the natural age of fish? Are they different ranges for all species? This sheephead in particular could it actually be 50?

What's the age range of largemouth bass?

Thats a question for the Google machine. Some fish like Mahi Mahi are the fastest growing and only live about five years.

Some sharks live to be almost 400 years old.

Sheepshead live about 25 years.

Largemouth live about 12-15 years.

F1 Largemouth ( most common now in the south) live shorter but grow faster and live on an average of 6-10 years in warmer southern waters. However in colder northern waters they live longer but grow slower and live on an average of 16-20 years with the oldest recorded at 23-24 years if I remember correctly.
Averaging northern and southern lifespans gives the species a 10-14 year average as Grem noted above….but our southern hot water guys don't live as long as the guys in the colder northern waters….but can grow larger in that shorter life.

Dang, those are worth a lot of money to a youth in the Star tournament.

Also, sheepshead are my favorite fish to eat from the bay.

Hope they are there in a few months when the tournament starts. You and your son would both win with those fish most years.

Many years back, I caught a couple of big sheepies on back-to-back casts. We knew they were tournament fish but didn't know if they would be big enough. So into the cooler for 3-4 more hours then to weigh station. The bigger one (8.5#) put me in first place with one weekend left in the tournament. Ended up getting beat by an ounce. Still wonder if not taking it directly in cost me a boat.
