your post has piqued my interest so i just went down an AI-prompting rabbit hole as well as had it explore available options at nearby (to me) retailers Academy, Lowe's, Basspro, and Tractor Supply.
there doesn't seem to be a lot of models readily available that are suitable for both:
1. shooting high caliber rifles, where you want active/electronic clipping so it suppresses the action and gunfire report, but amplifies and allows normal conversation and high frequencies like the pinging of steel targets. you also require a lower profile to not get in the way of your cheek weld when shooting.
2. long sessions of sitting on a tractor or ZTR, where you likely want some bluetooth music or podcasts. regular noise cancelling bluetooth headphones should be fine but most are too slow in active suppression for gunfire and some of the ones made especially for landscapers and such are too bulky for shooting.
further, I know you said you can't wear earbuds. good, because those aren't recommended for either purpose because they require a proper seal that can come loose during both mowing and shooting and especially not recommended for shooting due to inadequate active clipping to protect your hearing.
the main problem you will have OP, is you want at least 30 NRR... almost none of them provide that. It seems most provide around up to 22 or 23 NRR, even the $150-$200 models seem to offer up to 26. You'd have to put foam plugs in your ear canals under whichever model you choose, which you already said you don't want to do.
this is the one google AI prompts recommended for me, available to order at academy or in stock today at the bass pro shop in Spring:
Walker's XCEL 500BT Digital Electronic Ear Muff: $149.99
Quote:
Shooting: High 26 dB NRR and a slim design that won't interfere with your cheek weld . It features four listening modes, including one specifically for speech clarity, which is great for range safety
Tractor Work: It has Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music/podcasts and answering calls, plus "Variable Dynamic Sound Suppression" to handle the constant drone of an engine
