Mandatory evacuations are now in place for areas near 13th Ave in Randall County. If you are in this area, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY and follow all directions from emergency officials.

Earlier Update (6:56 PM):
A mandatory evacuation was issued for residents in the Chaparral Villas (Canyon area) near Brown Road and Cemetery Road due to an active wildfire.

Residents from Canyon Junior High east to Highway 87 should be READY TO EVACUATE if conditions worsen.

If you're in or near these areas:
Gather medications, important documents, pets, and essentials NOW
Stay alert and monitor local updates
Be prepared to leave quickly if more orders are issued

Please avoid the area so emergency crews can work safely.

Yes, it's gone. Got the call last night about 10pm and initiated emergency crews to begin restoring it. Been up all night. Big deal.

We threaded the needle on this one. Have a small farm southwest of Canyon, fire passed to the south and east of our place. It reached as far as the far southwest corner of Canyon, and our house is on the east side.

The guy who made our kitchen cabinets, his mom lives in that southwest corner, and his shop (his dad's old shop) escaped by a few hundred feet. We are out of town, and haven't yet heard of anyone we know being impacted. However, some of my wife's former co-workers live less than a quarter mile SE of that trestle, in really nice homes. I don't believe any of them lost property, as we haven't heard from them.

If you're trying to find it on Google Maps, it's at 34.95574790075254, -101.94130034004316 It crosses Tierra Blanca Creek (from Hereford and Buffalo Lake NWR)

As far as it being a busy route, not so much. I've often seen trains parked overnight on that trestle, as it's part of a 2-3 mile stretch with no road crossings. The trestle is on the line that runs from Lubbock to Canyon. I doubt more than one or two trains a day use it.

A few miles north of the trestle, this line Ts into the Clovis - Canyon - Amarillo line. That one is VERY busy, something like 50 trains a day, and they move fast.

So yes, it is in use, but I don't expect it to cause major disruptions. The only exception might be some of the coal trains headed to power plants in the South Plains area.

It ain't over yet, either, Still in a drought, and another one flared south of our place today. I could see the smoke on security cameras, and it also seem to be passing us to the south.

We are out of town for another 2 weeks. Renter took a closer look and it turns out we did lose a little. Mainly burned tires off equipment. It's going to be a bit of a pain to fix or scrap, and a few thousand dollars worth of damage.

Small amount of money, something we can easily absorb. We still consider ourselves very lucky, and our losses are nothing compared to others.
