Been quoted a little over $2,000 to fix 19 year old A/C unit. Anyone know of a good company to replace a 2.5 ton unit with a heat pump?

I would recommend Steven Bobinger with Total Comfort Air. He currently maintains my home and has moved/installed units for me. Very honest and dependable. Can't recommend him enough.

I'm surprised a 19 year old unit is fixable. Mine is getting up there.
But Air Solutions (BCS Air Solutions?) was highly recommended to me.

This. Steven is one of the, if not the, most trustworthy and professional contractors I have ever personally dealt with. I worked with him for years on the commercial side before he started his own business, and he was the only person I called to complete the HVAC on the new home we built last year.

My MILs unit was installed in 1991. We got quotes on fixing it v replacing it. Ended up replacing, but was still technically fixable.
Barker's is a Trane company, now. We've been very happy with them.
They have a lot of techs and have 24 hour service.
We financed at 0%.

Know Steven as a friend and have worked with him for several years, he's good people.
Will second the Barkers recommendation. While no longer a 'local' company they have been my go-to folks for years. Had to replace my 12yo heat pump this year and went with their recommended 3.5ton TRANE system and at 0% financing.
Crew was on time and had system replaced within 5 hours. Their install manager 'Pete' was a pleasure to work with. Crew did not leave a mess.

Just to test the waters. Is $12K about the right price to replace the compressor and coil on a central air unit?
That depends on the age of the unit.
If it's an older unit, replacing those might be kicking a very expensive can down the road.

When we priced ours a few years ago and when my parents priced theirs last year, a single stage unit wasn't much more than that.
We replaced our single stage with a two stage and have noticed a drop in our electric bill since we did that.

Get a few quotes on a new install.
Estimates came in $10-30K. About $14k for a variable speed unit was the cheapest. I am doing another remodel project and my contractor had his guy come out and it seems to be fixed now. Not sure of everything he did because I didn't get a chance to talk to him before he left but it was much cheaper than the new zone board and bypass duct that I was quoted $2100 by a large not so local company here in town.
Some contractors will take on an extra 25% when they drive up and know you are driving a new truck or have $$$$ property.
What brand sells a 14K variable speed?

In 2015 my original trane was installed by Climate "Doctor?" for $4000. Same unit today is about 12K. Inflation (and new government regulations on Freon) is a gut kick.
March 2024 did a full variable speed inside and outside unit to replace original 1999 units. 5 ton. Local company, friends of mine, 17k. Inflation is a b

I doubt that a warranty would come with the on line ac
But you coould contact Noah with Thorough Air and he can probably tell you the pros and cons of doing that and give you advice He is still just starting up his business and may have some time between jobs or wait for fall when ac companies are not busy
