Austin was named the No. 15 worst traffic city in the country, according to a new Consumer Affairs report. It was the only Central Texas city to make the top 15 but apparently not the worst overall in the Lone Star State. Other Texas cities like Houston (No. 7) and Dallas-Fort Worth (No. 14) were ranked higher than Austin, but they all earned worse scores than their previous ones last year. The fact that three state cities made the list's top 15 should say a lot about how car-reliant and backed-up our roadways can be.

Houston (7), DFW (14) and Austin (15).

Now tell us Texans something we do not know.

Is BCs considered part of the "Houston" metro?

Top 5 are : Washington, D.C. (1), Los Angeles (2), Miami (3), Atlanta (4) and New York City (5).

You know what they say about driving in Houston. Houston is an hour away from Houston. Fridays were the worst. Everyone was going out so log jams everywhere.

As far as Austin, I 35 pretty much sucks 24-7. Just stay away from it and you will be OK.

No.

And outside of the beginning of fall semesters, football games, and special weekends....the traffic here isn't that bad.

I can get almost anywhere in 15 - 20 minutes.

Correct

I laugh when I hear someone complain about the traffic here.

The medians suck but that is not traffic. That is just you having to think before you head out.

Yep, the traffic here can be bad for a few blocks at times during the day, but we don't have 10 miles and 75 lights to get through as they have in Houston,

I am not complaining about the traffic. Four miles and 12 stop lights on Texas Ave is not as bad as some other cities. I was asking if we consider BCS as part of the Houston metro area. My friends from out of state do. Metro areas such as Chicago and Denver can take up a lot of real estate.

Manor should have made the list. I live in Giddings and it usually takes me longer to get through Manor than it does to get to Manor. Given the size of that little craphole, that shouldn't be possible.

Yup. Its all about perspective. My parents live in BCS and complain about the traffic. That's "so bad now with so many students". Where as I live in Houston (and trying to move away!) and the traffic in BCS is nothing to me and my wife really. Only really "bad" on home game weekends. And even then it's mostly the 4 or 5 hours before kickoff and the few hours after the game ends.

Technically no because we were never required to get emission testing like the other metros were.

It's not the students that are making the amount of traffic worse. It's the people that are graduating and staying here and the retirees that are moving back.

BCS is its own Metropolitan Statistical Area, it's not part of Houston's. Population density between the two isn't consistently high enough for BCS to be part of it. Maybe it will be in Houston's MSA one day as both continue to sprawl.

I live in the metro area that landed at 18 on that list and think traffic in BCS was quite a bit worse. I can sit in traffic longer here but that's because it's significantly larger, things can be further away. In terms of how long it took to get to places that were relatively short distances away from each other, BCS was brutal to me. I lived in central CS so there's probably other parts that aren't as bad.

Not really fair to put Dallas and Fort Worth together, in my opinion. Fort Worth is not bad at all. Dallas, I'd argue is better than Houston or Austin. Houston has its share of a-hole drivers, but it's biggest issue is just that there are a ton of people living there. Austin's traffic shouldn't be the nightmare it is (I'd say it's my least favorite city in Texas to drive in) but no one allowed for proper roads to be built when the population started booming.

the traffic is bad here. It's not perspective. How many people live in Houston compared to BCS? How far are you commuting in Houston compared to BCS.

And students are a part of it. But in the evenings between 5-6 the bypass is horrible.

I remember reading years ago that BCS is considered an exurb of Houston because of the amount of commuters between the two. There is even a camera on campus at TAMU that shows the BCS area now abc13 when they talk about the weather. If BCS is not part of the main metro, I still see it as an exurb/part of the region.

Doesn't BCS fall under the Austin market as strange as that seems ?

Waco-Temple-Bryan are their own market for tv purposes which is why I would think BCS would tie closer to austin

thats because they upgraded their doppler radar and part of a network. All the Houston channels will show the campus radar now. I would assume waco and austin tv does the same thing.

Lived at both many years. No, the traffic is not bad here.

Starting to get old man yelling at clouds vibes on the traffic complainers.

My mom complains about the traffic. And basically she complains about anything that's barely crowded. So I have perspective on those thinking traffic here is bad.

Nobody has said that the students aren't part of it. It obvious that there is more traffic during the regular semesters than there is at Christmas and over the summer.

The students are not what is making it gradually more congested year after year after year. It's the growth of permanent residents that is doing that.

one of the post inferred it was too many students. I think the biggest rise in traffic esp on on the bypass is the number of commuters from BCS to Houston with opening of the toll road. You can get to parts of north Harris county much faster than in the past. I think some moved here because they can commute

and yes the traffic is bad.
