A few of the top executives in my company will be coming in town from NYC to visit a large client.
Where is a good Mexican spot to take these folks out to dinner that is located in downtown Austin?

Muchas Gracias

Doe any tourist come to Texas looking for authentic Mexican food? I just assume they are looking Texas-Mex.

+1 for Fonda San Miguel - We almost exclusively go there with large groups from out of town.

It's not in downtown, but very close to it. Licha's Cantina on E. 6th St is AMAZING! My mother-in-law who once owned a restaurant in Austin on E. 7th St gave her stamp of approval. My wife and I took her for lunch a couple months ago and she thought the food was delicious.

Tried Este for the first time today after seeing it mentioned. Suerte jr. Small place packed at 6:00 pm on a Wednesday. Certainly a great experience. Atmosphere is zero, but almost everything else was Suerte level with a maybe better menu, or certainly different enough for a novel experience on the same level.

i'm a big fan of both Suerta and ATX Cocina.

That said, I prefer hole in the wall mexican food where they barely speak english. But not sure that's where you want to take execs, even if that will be much more authentic.

Definitely. Eldorado (our most recent find) is a good $ example. It's in a run down shopping center way up north. Those kinds of places are fun to find.

I wouldn't exactly call El Dorado a hole in the wall, but it's certainly not fine dining. We used to go all the time before the wait time got ridiculous. I hear they now take reservations, so I guess a little pre-planning is in order. Enchiladas y Mas is generally my pick when I want hole in the wall Tex Mex.

Fonda San Miguel is the best Mexican food in town and the ambience is stunning. Would be a great spot for an executive dinner.
Matt's E Rancho is the most quintessential Austin Tex-Mex spot, it's where I take guests from out of state.

Make your Eldorado reservations 4 weeks ahead and you're good! We were there last Saturday night and were told that you even need reservations for breakfast now. Kind of frustrating since we've been eating their food since they were a pop up pre-brick & mortar. So dang good but so hard to get in.

Downtown for fancy Yankees I'd definitely say Mexta. It's fancy and very good.

I feel that way about Fonda San Miguel. Love the ambience and the margaritas, but the food is just okay. Definitely some interesting entrees and creativity but the end product was just good, not amazing. To me, Fonda San Miguel is to Mexican food what salt lick is to bbq.

Also, the reservation situation is annoying. I don't remember it ever being so busy that you couldn't get a 7 or 7:30 table without booking a month in advance.

Maybe I need to give it another shot. Any regulars have tips for getting in? Or is this just the "manufacture demand by limiting reservations online" thing?
