Meeting some out of state friends in Austin. They want to try authentic Tex-Mex.

Recommendations, please!

Picking them up at Bergstrom, but we have time to spend.

Eldorado is a solid one. Here are a few others I like:

Habanero
Enchiladas Y Mas
Joe's Bakery
El Borrego de Oro
Amaya's Taco Village
Keeper of The Spirits

El Dorado in not good and not Tex-Mex. It has vegan menu, donuts, biscuits and gravy,

Enchiladas Y Mas
Matt's is classic

I love mas. But it's akin to ponchos no comparison.

And dorado is continues to be the flag bearer for the now defunct dart bowl enchiladas. That alone sets them apart.

We have a Lupe Tortilla walking distance from the house, but only get fajitas to go for last minute feeds at the house. Best fajitas I know of in these parts.

This forum does repeat this thread like OB cycles " which gun should I get for home defense?"

Bit I like hearing about new places and reviews of the established ones. Some places have great reviews then will drop off for whatever reason.

There is no good Tex Mex in Austin. Getting good ol' carne guisada is impossible.

Does not compute with so many Hispanics living here.

True though, unless you start getting far north and south. Matt's, Maudie's, Mi Madre, El Mercado, etc. are all pretty meh.

El Dorado, Joe's Bakery, Jalapeño Express are all good, but not really classic Tex Mex.

"A steamin' greasy plate of enchiladas with lots of cheese and onions and a guacamole salad …. with iced tea and a waitress who will smile every time"

This and why Enchiladas y Mas classifies IMO.

As someone who has been to Eldorado Cafe a million times it is NOT classic Tex Mex nor do they market themselves as such. I think they call themselves Mexican inspired comfort food and if folks don't like it please tell your friends that it sucks too because it's already so dang busy it's really hard to get into!

Anyone remember this photo from ZZ Top's Tres Hombres album?

Looking at this while on a meal plan at Duncan was almost pr0n.

Well this a hole in the wall family place. In old downtown Round Rock that has killer enchiladas. Only 7-8 tables and they told me they don't offer tamales because the kitchen is too small. Recuerdos.

I never refer folks to it since it is a so small. It get take out.

Looks good except the beans and rice on opposite side of the plate. That should be a crime in Texas
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

I've never heard that in 65 years. But we all have our quirks.

BTW they add onions on request.

Beans and rice should be next to each other so you can easily mix them and then stuff them in the warm corn tortillas. It's a San Antonio thing.

And of course onions should be served on the side so you can take as many or as little as you like.

Not sure that this is a place that I would take someone from out of town, but for you locals that just want good Tex Mex with no wait, Ramos Tex-Mex Restaurant #3 off Mopac and Merrill town never disappoints.

I say this in every thread and will to continue to beat the drum. Matt's El Rancho is the spot you should take out of state guests. It's an Austin staple, great atmosphere, strong drinks, Bob Armstrong dip is always on point, and the asadero tacos are out of this world. I truly don't understand the hate for this place - they are always packed for a reason

I've got no problem with that rec for non Texans.

Hell Panchos would work for the Yankees.

Agreed. It's a great place to get the whole Austin experience and the food is solid.

That said, I wouldn't go there on a weekend if it was just me and my family unless we're celebrating something.

I moved to Austin from Houston, and Matt's is…fine.

It's not a bad choice for out of towners for the vibe, but if you've eaten a lot of TexMex it's pretty average on the food.

I grew up in Htown and have been in Austin for 3 years. Agreed that Houston is a much better city for Tex Mex, but I'll put Matt's up there with most. I do miss El Tiempo, that's probably my #1 all time

Fair, I've been a handful of times and wasnt impressed (it was also hyped up).

Don't think I've mentioned on this thread but Mama Betty's in Round Rock was opened by a guy whose mom ran several Ninfas locations, it's legit Houston TexMex complete with creamy green sauce on the table.
