May have the opportunity to work remotely part time and be closer to my parents in Dallas.

seems like southwest Houston is nice enough and just an hour from the beach and nature parks.

any recommendations for neighborhoods to rent in?

the biggest Jewish conservative temple is Congregation Beth Jeshurun in Meyerland so I would imagine it has to be relatively safe compared to other parts of Houston.

It is a good area but flooding is the main thing to think about there. Flood insurance is a must and a raised house is a good idea in a lot of that area.

Definitely see an increase in pedestrian traffic on Saturdays around Brays Bayou.

It's as safe as you'll get in Houston outside of the much more expensive enclave municipalities. Most neighborhoods have contract deputy patrol, or you could look a little North to the City of Bellaire.

Just avoid the old apartment complexes like this one that we haven't figured out how to get rid of just yet:

Westbury general rule. Stay north of W Belfort and east of Hillcroft and you'll be fine. Most everything north of Willowbend to the Bayou is in the floodplain.

Some people really like Maplewood N and S (west of Hillcroft) but I rented there for 9 months and it was noticeable worse than where I live (trashy houses/neighbors, flooding, crime)

15 year resident of Westbury.

It is truly a sacred river. Recall how in the days of old, when developers still walked the Earth inside the Beltway, the ungrateful help had taken Riverside Terrace captive and forced the Lord's people to pack up their temples and flee about 8 miles West down the bayou to the promised land foretold by George Meyer.

Depending on your budget you may want to give Braeburn (between Meyerland and Sharpstown) a look. The neighborhoods aren't quite as pretty looking as Meyerland but have similar safety/peace while the prices are considerably lower.

Main issue with any place in Meyerland or Braeburn will be flooding, but the results are dramatically different even in the same neighborhood. One house will be a total loss while the house two streets over won't take in a drop of water. Be sure to do flood research before you rent or buy in this area.

Would recommend taking a Sunday drive and seeing if you find a place available that might work for you.

should have clarified I would be renting and not buying a home.

seems there is a lot to do in Houston area with the sports teams, restaurants, five hours from New Orleans, 4 hours to Dallas, and one hour to state parks and the Beach.

My grandparents used to live on Rutherglenn at hilcroft. The Jewish bagel shop around the corner was awesome. My mom was a lifeguard at the Jewish community center way back in the day. Not Jewish though.

We live in Meyerland now. I once lived in Westbury about a decade ago. Westbury looks a decade older while Meyerland is seeing lots of renos and new builds. Largely thanks to flooding, but also because much of it is zoned to Bellaire High School.

Kolter is a really good elementary if you have kids that age.

We have been there about a year and a half and really like it. We aren't Jewish but we do really like the JCC.

You're lucky they moved. Lot of strange people on that street.

Bellaire seems to go on lockdown for bomb threats, weapons scares and otherwise every month or so.

Like most of the "top" HISD schools, I'm sure kids in the GT/Vanguard programs do fine, but it seems like a far cry from Bellaire 20 years ago.

Its all Edgars now, who do they get zoned to that school in the past I heard it was hard to do that?

Well whatever you think about the high school, it still makes a massive difference in home values.

I just wonder how many folks are spending the 1.5M+ it takes to build over there and sending their kids to Bellaire.

Kolter would be the bigger draw if I was looking over there.

And don't get me wrong. I would take Bellaire HS anyday over the crap I'm zoned to.

Plenty of apartment complexes in the zone, plus HISD has much wider school choice options now than when most of us were in HS.

And I assume the there are a lot more DINKS and empty nesters in the home ownership category, which opens up spots for transfers.

The biggest mystery is that if you have the ability to work remote and want to be close to parents in Dallas why would you choose Houston? I get hating Dallas but then live in Fort Worth or a small town nearby. You can visit your parents a couple of times per week, have dinner with them, help with groceries, take to doctors appts if needed, etc. None of that is happening from Houston.

Even a weekend visit to Dallas from Meyerland on a Friday afternoon/evening would be a beatdown before you're even done wading through the galleria.

If I was looking to rent near beaches, nature, and Jews within 4 hours of Dallas, San diego or long beach would be way higher on the list than southwest Houston.

El Paso is too far from Dallas, but Meyerland isnt. The 8hr plus drive to pop in for lunch is totally reasonable. And that's assuming no traffic. Which is hilarious in and of itself.

OP must not be aware of all the I45 planned upgrades. 4hrs? Probably 6 for at least 2 decades.

Thanks that is great advice.

Would be moving back to Texas to be closer to my parents (83 and 76) - no school age kids.

Would be more about a nice inexpensive home (compared to the DC area) and lots to do outdoors.

It was for some time, at least parts of it. I am a consultant in the construction industry and some of the homes and streets I saw as part of a mass buy and re-build by a developer were pretty disgusting and the area was run down. In all fairness the floods in Harvey really helped put money back in to the area and cleaned it up. Now if we can get the city to fix the roads.

Anyone know why Westbury Square is not bulldozed by now? Used to go there when I was a kid with my parents, really good Chinese restaurant in there I remember, drove by it the other day for the first time in decades and I was surprised it was still standing. Pretty bad shape, but still there.
