Ok, another all terrain tire thread……

I have had BFG KO 2's on two different trucks and liked them but seeing guys complaining that they can't get their KO 2's balanced.

Anybody had any bad experiences with them and any alternate suggestions?

Going on a 2014 F-150.

I have the KO3s on my F150 and previously had the KO2s. No complaints with either and got 60k+ on both sets of all terrains I had. KO3s only have like 15k on them now.

Toyos are good but just as expensive as the BFGs
Falkens look good and apparently perform well - I am not sure I trust them but that's based on experience/exposure that's 15 years old
Nittos are good now since they changed the tread compound

Several others that are alright too.

I use to run KO2 on my 2500 Chevy when I was pipelining.

Lots of highway miles and driving down the ROW. Discount never had issues balancing them.

I like the Nitto Recon Grapplers. I have 65K on my current set and am about to replace them with the same tires. 2015 F150

There are only a handful of reasons you can't balance a tire:

-you're an incompetent person balancing them/use the wrong balancing method/cone/etc.

-the tire has a tread separation

-the tire is an all terrain or mud terrain that has gone way too long since last R&B and are cupped to hell - which still can be balanced but will still ride like absolute crap

-filled with fix a flat/liquid

I think that's it but it's been awhile since I have balanced a tire.

I've had good luck with KO2s in the past so I checked out the KO3s on their website today. There were quite a few reviews complaining about not being able to balance brand new KO3s on there. Could be some QC issues going on with the new design, but I personally have not had issues with BFGs either like you.

The original KO2s came out and had too soft of a tread compound that wore out on 3/4 & one tons in like 40k. They fixed it not too long afterwards.

There is perhaps an issue with the new KO3s but I have not really heard of anything. Regardless, you can still balance the tires. They may not ride very well due to a faulty design, but you can still "balance" them.

It's semantics but just saying the balancing is not likely the issue, the tire is.

When I was looking for some all terrain tires a few months ago I called the general manager at Discount Tire who I know. I was actually between the new BFGs vs Toyos and he recommended the Falkens. He stated he has been having issues with BFGs which is why he did not recommend them.

So far I love the Falkens, they ride great, not loud but they are a heavy tire. I lost some MPG with them but they are worth it to me thus far.

I'm running the Toyo Open Country AT 3 and love them more than my recon grapplers.

I put BFG KO3s on my 2020 Wrangler JLUR about a year ago.

Driven it off road at Big Bend and put another 23,000 highway miles on in the past year driving to Richmond, VA and back and another road trip to Daytona Beach, FL and back.

I'm really happy with them.

Michelin LTx at2 tires have lasted the best and are a more quiet ride imo. But they are the least aggressive of the all terrain tires mentioned above. The BFGs I've had wear out and get noisy sooner in comparison to the Michelins but we drive on rock ranch roads often. Recently replaced the Michelins with nitto ridge grapplers on a truck needing more of a mud grip occasionally. The Michelins still had decent tread with over 60k miles on a 2500hd that hauls heavy loads occasionally.
So I'd recommend Michelin if you don't need a mud grip type all terrain tire.

On my second set on my F250 and won't buy anything else in the future.

My suspicion is that the "trouble balancing" the large AT tires is mostly due to the population of buyers and the sizes they are buying and what vehicle they run and how non-standard do many of those suspensions and steering and drivetrain setups are…

Ran Falken Wild peak AT3Ws for ~55k miles and still had a bit of tread left before I moved to the AT4Ws. Great tire overall!

I'm a huge BFG fanboy. Had them for decades. I have never ever ever ever ever had a set that stayed balanced. If you have time in life to rotate and balance and keep pressures religiously….like every 3000 miles, they may do OK. I'm shopping for something else next time. They are very hard to balance and they are just not a great comfortable tire. They shake and shimmy and rumble and vibrate with harmonics of the vehicle….just not a tire I'd reccomend unless you want to be the cool guy with the BFG.

I think I'm going to try an E rated Toyo or Nitto 1ags has suggested.

I run on Nitto Ridge Grapplers and have 30k miles on them. The tires are very quiet on roads, and still have plenty of tread. The tread was rated for 50-60k miles.

I've got MT Baja Boss' on my AT4. Not sure if it is still the case but when I bought them they were about $100 cheaper per tire compared to KO2's

My F250 had BFG's on it when I bought it. I think I put at least one or two more sets of BFG's on it. I liked them. Not too much road noise, good traction on and off pavement. My problem was that I never got anywhere close to the mileage expectancy that they claimed they should get and they are not cheap.

I switched to Cooper Discoverer ATP's awhile back. Really like them as well. I got about 10k over the mileage expectancy on my first set. Currently about 30k on my second set with plenty of life left in them. They stand up to road hazards, thorns, etc. really well to.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I really like my Falken Wildpeak AT Trails. You might want to consider the AT4W.

Have had these on my F150 for about 2 1/2 years and love them. If I had to buy a new set tomorrow, it would be these.

Had KO2s on a 4Runner and after a whole lot of effort, I've just determined that they are junk and no idea what people see in them.

Another vote for the Toyo A/T III. I've been running these for 3 years on my F-150 and absolutely love them. Almost 50k miles. Next set will be the same exact thing.

Question. Toyo has an Open Countey AT3 that is supposedly designed for EVs. It's a perfect size for my Ram though. Any issue running an EV designed tire on a normal truck? 275/70-18

Load ratings and tire weight seems to be similar so I'm thinking this should not be a problem.

No issues. The compound makeup and sidewalls (more aero) are different.

Aren't they a lot more than the regular?

I looked at these for the lightning but went Defender LTX MS2 instead.

335 per tire which is more but I wouldn't say incredibly more for a good tire in that class. There aren't many options in an SL rating.

I'm also trying to stay from E rated.

Good luck staying away from E. Seems like every damn tire slightly bigger than stock on a half ton is E nowadays. I could barely find a D, which I would have been happy with but had to settle on a 64lb tire instead of a 48-50lb one..

I really like Maxxis Razr AT on my Tacoma. Mine are 265/70/16, SL/P rated. They do make E load range also in this.

I've been in the same boat previously trying to find an SL tire. I've been going back to the Michelins which you can't really go wrong with.

On my new truck I have 285/70/17 as stock. I didn't see much when I was looking around for an eventual replacement. But I just saw on Toyos website they have the Open Country R/T Trail in SL and it's only 49#, which is about what my stock Goodyear Territory MT is. Might be worth the look, but I've heard some pretty bad things about Toyo.

Also the new Nitto Terra Grappler G3 is available in a lot of sizes in SL as well. I've always heard good things about Nitto.

I just got the Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain put on.

They are a little noisier than the Michelin's I took off (lot higher tread), but the grip is noticeably better. They ride very smooth...I've been impressed so far.
