Looking for a full-size truck, big enough to accommodate wife, 2 young kids, 2 big dogs (~100 lbs each). Given the issues with the new tundras, I'm potentially open to GMC or Chevy. Would be using this mostly for commuting to and from work, but would also likely become our road trip vehicle (6-7 hour drives).

don't buy the 6.2 GM. they farked it up. 3.0 duramax is your answer.

think space might be tight with 2 dogs and growing kids in the back seat.

Agree. Suburban and a an occasional uhaul trailer rental may be a better option if most of the miles will be spent commuting.

Yeah, you need to get an SUV and not a truck.

Chevy and GM have way more issues than the new Tundras.

My brother is on his second 6.2 liter. He put 150k on his first one with no issues. I think it was a 2020 model High Country. He just bought another one a few months ago. His company makes them buy new ones every 5 years

agree with others. i have two kids and one 100 pound dog and they don't fit in my f150. zero room for them in the back unless its just across town. no way you can make 6-7 hours work.

the expedition max on the other hand - can handle two kids, plus all the luggage, plus a large wire kennel upright to keep the dog in.

Every time I compare they all have their issues right now. Turbo failures, cam phasers, lifters...each brand is a mess right now, trying to comply with CAFE standards.

If you get a truck, I'd go with the 5.3 V8 from Chevy. Put in a $250 Range AFM/DFM disabler so you don't have lifter issues.

But...it's going to be a tight fit with two big dogs and two kids. I have a bed cover that's fairly waterproof, so we put all our luggage in the bed...even then, we're pretty full with the four of us and no dogs.

Had a buddy buy a '25 AT4 with the 3.0, didn't last 3 weeks and it was full of electrical gremlins. About 2 months of GM not being able to figure it out, they bought it back and now he's on his 2nd one. Not saying it's the 3.0 but QC in general.

I recently picked up a 3/4 ton 4wd suburban just for this reason. Its made long road trips much easier Even though we have to use a hitch mounted luggage carrier for longer trips.

Cam phasers have not been an issue since mid 2019 or 2020. You'd need a vehicle manufactured in the second half of 2019 to have the good cam phasers.

That said, if you buy a Ford, expect about 80 recalls over the next few years.

The 5.3 has been off the radar for a good while now.

I had a 24 Sierra with the 3.0 that I put ~ 35k miles on. It was great. Would recommend.

TBF I think all vehicles these days are dog ***** If I was in the market for a new truck these days I'd seriously consider ram. Technology and interior are some of the nicest around and it's cheaper than the competition. Mechanically I don't think they are any worse than the rest these days. Which is sad how much quality has dropped over the past decade.

All that paired with the warranty for 2026 model year, I'd also go Ram if I was after a brand new truck

When I was looking, the RAMs were not cheap. And they should be for a stellantis product.

I think the whole point of a Ram is the option of the Cummins.

Everyone has issues right now, just pick what you like and be prepared.

Honestly, Ram is looking like the best option moving forward with the warranty they're adding in 2026

We test drove 5 trucks last weekend. The Tundra ride quality disappointed despite the coil spring rear suspension. I was expecting it to ride like the Dodge.

The 2.7 turbo and 3.0 Duramax are both better and more reliable than the 5.3.

Disabling AFM mitigates the lifter issues but doesn't eliminate them completely.

I dont think anything can be done to eliminate issues from any of the models. But if you go with that engine, that's what I'd do.

The better option is the 2.7 turbomax. Slightly less horsepower but more torque. While it uses AFM it's not based on lifter disabling, but rather a sliding camshaft so far less issues. It and the 3.0 are probably GM's most reliable engines.

I hate that Toyota went away from their proven V8 and they clearly had BIG problems with the production line in a lot of the turbos, but they seem to have stepped up and handled those issues pro-actively in a very responsible way. I'd still trust them over ALL of the other manufacturers.

I also happen to think the new Tundras look pretty bad but that's another issue.

While higher than Toyota's historic numbers, you have a higher chance of dying from Covid than having your 2022-2023 engine fail from the crankshaft issue.
