Recs on sound deadening? Got a 71 suburban (3 door) as a new toy/project and want to quieten it down some.

While I'm no expert, I have tried many sound deadening materials on several different vehicles.
The butyl mat is good for deadening pings. Think gravel hitting in wheel well type noise. As mentioned above, you don't need 100% coverage, just enough to absorb the vibrations. Sort of like putting your hand on a ringing guitar string or percussion cymbal.
Mass loaded vinyl seems to be the most effective at blocking sound coming through panels. The more coverage the better as it blocks sound coming through and absorbs sound inside the vehicle.
I have 2 very similar vehicles (same make, model, and body style). One has really good butyl mat coverage in/on all panels. The other has similar butyl mat coverage with mass loaded vinyl on interior of firewall, fenders, and drivetrain tunnel. The one with mass loaded vinyl is significantly quieter.

I've had good luck with this product. Easy to cut, bend and shape around uneven surfaces. I used it for sound deadening in doors.
