Are the late 20'teen' Escalades a decent vehicle?

I've been driving boring trucks forever...looking to get something I actually enjoy driving. There is a 2019 w/78k miles locally for what seems to be a good deal. I don't have the time, knowledge, or desire to take cars to the shop or fix on my own.

Then you should probably just uber everywhere.

I just bought an 18 scalade, all my googling suggests that 18-19 is a sweet spot. 10spd, pre COVID. My paint is immaculate, I know 15+ had some paint issues. I put a range afm disabler on it and swapped the dealers fresh 0w20 with 5w30. If I have to do a real afm delete so be it. I say go over the car with a fine toothed comb and if you love it go for it. Love mine so far

Nice? What color and package?

The one I'm looking at is the dark blue with tan interior and premium luxury trim. Might go look at it and see if they'll take 28k

to elaborate, be sure to drive a low speeds and pay attention to transmission shift points and see if they are annoying to you.
They are known for searching for gears constantly. Listen for lifter ticking.

Esv luxury Gray/silver/black interior with 91k, I paid 31 and it's been a New Mexico car since it left Arlington. But the best part is it's 4wd. Not awd, real selectable 4wd including 4lo. I didn't even know you could get that in an Escalade and I've very rarely seen it in Yukon Denalis.

GM v8 have the lifter and cylinder deactivation issues, just be aware. More rare but more devastating is the 6.2L issue where the journal bearings go and it grenades the entire engine. It seems to keep happening on even new engines up to 2026 so fix attempts are no guarantee and the problem isn't necessarily known or solved yet. The issue is that it is only a very small number of them, but it is a 5 figure problem out of warranty.

So is expecting a car to last without maintaining or repairing it.

There's a massive difference in maintaining…oil, tires, fluids, filters, etc (minimal time and money)…and repairing a grenaded engine or transmission (lots of time and money).

You'll be shocked to know I've maintained plenty of vehicles, not repaired any, and successfully driven myself plenty without ubering everywhere.

if you want something fun, why are you considering another truck?

Let's start over:
1. What kind of trucks have you had and what is boring about them?
2. Why do you expect to enjoy driving an esalade more than a truck?
3. Why is an escalade preferred over a sports car?
4. Since you are looking at used Escalades, is cost a factor?
5. When your car breaks, do will you sell it broken, abandon it where it lies, donate it, or do something else?
6. Are you open to suggestions on other vehicles that may better suit your needs than a 7 year old escalade?
7. Fill in the blank: You don't have time to drop a broken vehicle off at the shop because ___.

I haven't followed every detail, but didn't GM come out and say the best way to prevent the 6.2 grenading itself is to run heavier oil?

This thing already has 78k miles? Its best days are behind it.

I test drove an Escalade of that generation when it was new and I felt like it was slow off the line and conversely took a long time to stop once you got going. This was in comparison to my 2015 Navigator with a 3.5 boost.

In summary, you'd just be buying that thing for looks, because predicted reliability and performance are not strong points.

0w20 in a truck is dumb anyway

I went and test drove it a bit ago.

Paint was pretty dull as well as a lot of shopping cart dents and scratches. Looks like it lived in DFW for it's entire life until heading north this January.
Interior had quite a few stains and wear spots. Both back seats probably had a car seat permanently strapped in.

Interior and exterior both looked like someone had gone over them hard to get it spiffed up a little, and it still looked worn.

There was a shimmy in the steering wheel and a hard pull to the left...just an alignment? Maybe other issues?

I heard a couple clunks as I was driving...only got up to 45 or so. I put the pedal down once and there was a distinctive 'clunk'...put the pedal down again and the same thing clunked...I asked the 21 year old salesman who can't rent a car if he had any idea what that was, 'bro I dunno man'.

Pass.

Yeah that one's a hard pass, especially at that price. I have test driven dozens of gmt900s (I know this is not one) and it seems like they are all either completely ragged out or cherry, nothing in between. The cherry ones I went home to think about were gone the next day so not everyone thinks 6.2 GMs are crap. I actually wouldn't fear that clunk too much, my Yukon XL has one and I'm pretty sure it's just a cv. Other likely culprits are motor mount or transaxle (that one's expensive)

That's the fix they are trying. Data indicates it isn't working all that well, so oil weight isn't likely the cause or an effective solution for what is. It doesn't seem to affect a lot of the them but when it does it is a total loss.

Have you considered a 2008-2009 Hummer H2? 6.2 and 6L80
