According to Tiger droppings Woodard did not have the authority to fire Kelly, so technically he was still coach and abandoned his post, allowing them to now fire him for cause.

Guess this means any potential lead has turned them down and they realize just how reactionary their decision was after we slaughtered them in BR.

This further proves my case from my post yesterday about how the 3rd quarter of the Aggie/LSU game forever changed the trajectory of their program.

Kelly's attorney will say the Woodward was acting as an agent and a reasonable person would believe he had the authority to fire Kelly and LSU will owe it all.

but this is Louisiana so....

Such a poverty program. To all the people who say it's only the state that doesn't have money but LSU has tons, I say BS. LSU is poor as f***.

Pay attention potential coaching candidates.

It's a pretty safe bet that LSU is not going to argue "He abandoned his post."

His contract states that if they were firing him for cause that they had to inform him of this within 7 days of termination (it has been 16 days now).

They are trying to back track and say that he wasn't officially terminated until yesterday because Woodward didn't have the authority to fire him without the approval of the board (which has now approved it supposedly).

They informed BK yesterday that he is being fired for cause. We don't know yet what the accusation is, but sounds like it might have something to do with how he handled the Greg Brooks situation (a player that was diagnosed with cancer in 2023)

This is going to get ugly. Love it.

A school that steals from children's hospitals doesn't want to honor its contract with a failed coach? I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked.

What a s***show! If they don't have the money to pay his buy-out? Is that what is going on here?

AI assist for what it's worth...

According to a lawsuit filed by Brian Kelly on November 11, 2025, LSU is alleging that former Athletic Director Scott Woodward did not have the authority to fire him, and therefore he was not "formally terminated". Kelly's lawsuit contests this position, and seeks a declaratory judgment that confirms he was fired without cause and is owed his full $54 million buyout.
Key details from the lawsuit:
  • Initial Firing: Kelly was dismissed by then-AD Woodward on October 26, 2025, with LSU citing poor on-field performance. A performance-related firing triggers the multi-million dollar buyout provision in his contract.
  • Negotiations Breakdown: LSU reportedly offered Kelly settlement payments of $25 million and $30 million, which he rejected.
  • LSU's Legal Position: During a breakdown in negotiations, Kelly's lawsuit alleges that LSU informed his legal team that he had not been "formally terminated" and that Woodward lacked the authority to do so. LSU also allegedly suggested it had grounds to fire Kelly "for cause," a move that would void the buyout.
  • Woodward's Departure: Woodward left LSU four days after Kelly's initial firing, amid public criticism from Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry over the size of Kelly's contract.
While the details of this specific claim are new due to Kelly's lawsuit, the issue is directly related to the ongoing dispute over his contract buyout, which has been widely reported since his firing.

BK's counsel could easily argue "apparent authority" even if Woodward didn't have "actual authority", along with a lot of other quotes from across that administration all the way up to the governor, and easily win this case.

Such a bad look for a once-heralded enterprise. What would be head coach would want to walk into that snakepit?

Surely there is zero chance something that ridiculous would hold up? How the hell would Kelly know his boss "didn't technically have the authority" to fire him? That's absurd

Maybe but not certainly. The lawyers are going to fight this even if LSU is flush with cash. Gotta shoot your shot.

If they were a real program they would've followed our lead and presented a check to the Tiger Foundation at halftime for $54 million.

2 years later: Profit.

This seems ridiculous. Wouldn't Kelly's team have all sorts of affirmative defenses to this? Apparent authority? Mutual mistake? Anticipatory breach, etc? What a terrible position to put your legal counsel in. "Make the argument that we didn't aaaaactually fire him. Yeah, that's the ticket!"

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous.

The governor coming out complaining about the buyout and everyone else talking about the firing being for performance is really going to hurt LSU's case. Hard to make the argument about them firing him for cause for something that happened 2 years ago.

The only reason they say he wasn't officially terminated was so they could reset the seven day "for cause" notification window.

If you are a head coach looking for a new job and have opportunities at many power schools, why would you willfully walk into that dumpster fire with all of the political crap going on?

Even though LSU is considered a high-tier job, I would take Florida, Penn State, and even Auburn over that situation.

They are only doing this because his contract states that he has to be informed that he is being fired for cause within 7 days of termination. It's been two weeks so they are using a technicality to say okay now you are being officially fired and oh by the way it's for cause. If he was fired two weeks ago then the time limit is up to say it's for cause so they have to argue that he wasn't fired until now

Yeah, but the **** show and reputation damage (what little LSU even has) is going to send them to the dark ages trying to find a new coach or even players in this NIL era.

Even if they went with somewhat of a no-name "Buckyball" style hire to save money, now that players are getting paid millions, this behavior directly affects their contract negotiations as well.

What coach with options is going to choose to walk into that school knowing they will demand a national championship by year 4 and then refuse to honor your contract?

Remember that s***show LSU was pulling when Chavez left them to come to A&M? I said back then that LSU acts out of emotion, not business oriented decision making. That was when Alleva was AD (even after his botched handling of the Duke lacrosse case. How he ever got another job is beyond me.)

Then we also saw the crap that went on between Leach and Texas Tech. Again, purely emotional on Hance's part to fire Leach just because he didn't like him. That was a mess for several years.

College football is a business. Fans can scream all they want but the administrators should keep the emotion out of it.
