The first step is to hire Dennis Lindsey as GM as soon as possible.

The next step is a 2025-26 tank. There are 3 Tier 1 prospects this year and some other good ones in the 4 to 10 range. I don't think you can out tank the Wizards or Indiana, but the top 3 odds are flat anyways for the worst 3 teams. Ideally you are 5th or worse.

Each of the 3 worst teams has 40% odds at a top 3 pick.
If you are 4th worst you have 36% odds.
If you are 5th worst you have 31% odds.
If you are 6th worst you have 27% odds.

The next step is to put the entire roster (except Flagg) up for bid. This will help with the tank and bring back some depleted draft capital.

At this point the Mavs don't own their picks, but that is a sunk cost. We all knew that when Nico decided to nuke the franchise for no reason. All moves need to be made with the lense of competing again by 2030. If you have to give up a high pick to Charlotte next year, then so be it. Do it if it helps long term. PJ Washington and Gafford aren't helping in 2030 so they need to go if you can extract value. It doesn't really matter if you give Charlotte the 3rd pick or the 13th pick. Just makes the moves that are necessary to support Flagg + hopefully a top 5 pick long term. Would prefer to flip some of these guys into more 2026 draft picks.

Trade this guy, trade that guy, keep this guy. Everybody is tradable, including Flagg at this point. Without draft picks, and a history of not being able to sign marquee draft picks (and who would want to come to this ****hole now?), securing draft capital is mandatory. I don't even know if it's possible.

We are staring at a repeat of the 1990's Mavericks, something that resembles the Hornets/Pelicans/Wizards existence where you cycle through draft picks, coaches, and GM's.

Agree. Not tanking in '26 hurts you the most. This is your best chance to meaningfully help your team for the long term. I don't care if Charlotte gets a better pick in '27 because I tanked so badly that I'm still floundering. Also, that pick is top 2 protected, so even if they suck again, a little lottery magic and you're stacking top talent in 3 straight drafts. When that PJ trade got made, no one in their right mind could fathom the Mavs '27 pick could be top 2.

That's possible, but unfortunately that is the risk that the Mavs now have to take. They shouldn't be in this position of course. They should have just kept their team in Luka and Grimes together, then gone into the playoffs last year and taken on OKC. Maybe they win the title, maybe they get bounced, who knows. But instead, here the Mavs are and now they have to choice but to tank into an unknown future.

Maybe Flagg will end up just being solid, not spectacular. Or maybe Flagg will be a top 10 guy. Maybe they cash in on a 35% chance and get someone like Dybanasta or Peterson to pair with Flagg and become title contenders with 2-4 years. Or maybe they draft a bum. It's all a sunk cost at this point, so the Mavs just have to roll the dice.

The 1990s Mavs were stuck on the train of consistently being the worst team in the league while also having lousy lottery luck. Then when they did gain a little bit of draft traction with the 3 J's, they ended up knuckleheads fighting over Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton in her prime.

I get it.

The only upsetting part about this is it make the Luka trade even more stupid and pointless. The guy who made the decision has now been fired just 8 months later and no part of his "plan" will even play out.

Trading Luka for absolutely no reason is somehow worse than trading him for bad reasons

Well, his plan was centered on old guys with questionable availability. So I would say it did play out. Just predictably poorly

Today is a reminder of just how ridiculous the trade was. The Mavs received:

- Aging veteran who's always hurt, and very predictably hurt now.
- Max Christie who averages career 7 points/game
- a 2029 first round pick. 2029! 5 years from that possibly bearing any fruit.

How Nico pulled that off and how nobody stopped him is astounding.

Traded a generational player for a guy who you would struggle to dump for anything 8 months later.

Yep, the plan was to trade for a guy with the nickname "Street Clothes" (that player has missed 31 of 45 games since he's joined the team) and then ask your 32 yr old PG to play the most minutes in the NBA and hope he doesn't get hurt (he got hurt).

The 'vision' played out entirely in the most predictable way.

Imagine how much worse this would be if Nico didnt fail upwards into Cooper Flagg. You would be looking at a team that has zero future or pieces to build around

We'd be back to drafting Uwe Blab and Wang Zhi Zhi.

And hanging Brad Davis jerseys in the rafters . . .

Honestly, this thing failing so spectacularly right out of the gate may literally be what helps save it from a decade of garbage IF they can make good trades from here.

Another take on just how ridiculous the trade was: 1) You could have had Austin Reaves - no question that doesn't hold a deal up. 2) But even still, Nico, did you watch the Lakers the last 4 years? They sucked. They were a DOA franchise. And you basically crafted your roster into that - except instead of LeBron, you have Kyrie. Wtf man

Also zero of their own draft picks after 2026 until 2031

Nico is a ****ing criminal

I might be the only person here that actually watched it, but this call was changing point, and the refs blew it. Had it properly been called, Dallas probably wins

MJ didn't screw over as many kids as Nico did. I remember telling my kid that Luka got traded away. Eff Nico. That POS cowboy should take his trades and shove him up his arse.
