We just returned from 9 days in Montana. Absolutely awesome. Only one bad weather day. We are on a national park quest and have been to a good many with the kids. Glacier is so unique and large. Where I think Yellowstone is more about trying to see / hit all of the specific items (geysers, mud pots, bison, waterfall etc), I felt like Glacier was more about experiencing nature. Hikes. Dramatic scenery. Wildlife, but having to make more effort to see it than just rolling down the window like Yellowstone. Both are amazing and so different.
We spent 4 days in the park. A few shorter hikes (you don't have to do long hikes to see amazing lakes and water falls etc), some lake day paddleboarding, and other stuff. It's such a big park with somewhat limited access but it seemed like they control / manage that so much better than Yosemite where we went 2 years ago.
The next 5 days were in Whitefish MT. We spent a day on the ski resort doing the zip lines and alpine slides etc. Great views of the valley and whitefish lake. We did a full-day guided float fly fishing trip on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, which was amazing. The first fly fishing for my daughter and son and they loved it. We did a morning white rafting trip. We planned on a Flathead Lake day with a rental boat but that was the bad weather day. White caps, high of 66, rain and the water temp was about 60. Not worth the boat rental money. We took the gondola up the ski resort and planned to do the 4 or 5 mile hike down but the weather socked us in at the top. So had a couple of beers and rode the gondola back down.
Whitefish is really cool. That said, you could definitely get a sense of a lot of Texas money there. Seemed like it's heading towards Aspen levels. Different than say Steamboat Springs or Crested Butte.
Flying direct from DFW to Kalispell was easy (not cheap) on American. 2 hr and 45 min. Kalispell has a cool downtown. It's a bigger city, but 20 min from Whitefish and 30 min from the entrance to the National Park. Everything was very convenient.
Open to answering any questions but this was a bucket list trip.
