In fact he started the Sheriff's Association to stop mob violence against freed slaves, he was a very effective governor, in conjunction with Matthew Gaines (a feed slave and one of his best friends and who also has a statue on campus) started Prairie View A&M- as well as schools across Texas so freed slaves and their children could be educated.
