Interesting how the game has changed. I remember how dominant running backs were in the late 80's through the 90's. The league was just littered with great RBs. Every team was trying to find a workhorse back. Backs would routinely get 25+ carries per game. Seems like today's NFL (and moreso today's NBA) are just cheap copies of what they were in the 80's and 90's.

currently, imo TEs are gobbling up short-medium yardage RBs once got, but there are a number of factors. OCs want to innovate.

I wonder if CTE has been a factor in this change. The most violent collisions are between the backs and the backers/safeties. De-emphasize the running game and both sides take fewer hard collisions.

I think it's just that defensive players are so big and fast and don't allow for as many rushing yards as they did years ago.
