My son is committed to joining the Corps next year with a Navy ROTC scholarship. He is struggling to choose the best outfit for him. He's done a couple of Spend the Night and Corps Leadership Invitational already and made some decisions based on his gut, but is now not so sure.
Anyone have advice for him on contacts and how to make the best choice for him? I was a non-reg, so I am pretty clueless here.

Does he play (or can he pretend to play) a musical instrument?

I'd say join the outfit that most aligns with his military goals, or that he'll have the most fun with.

Do not let them randomly assign him to one.

Avoid E2 unless he really wants to deal with Rev.

Off topic, my son is applying for an NROTC scholarship. What kind of stats did your son have? (GPA, SAT/ACT, Extra Curricular, etc.)

Yeah, he has it down to P-2, S-1, and G-2, I think. Didn't give E-2 any thought simply because of Rev (loves her, but that isn't his path).

3.96 unweighted, 4.57 weighted
1390 SAT
Cadet Colonel, AFJROTC
4 year Varsity Swim
4 year Theatre Letterman
Student Body Vice President
Top 5% in a large 5A (next year 6A) school
Lifeguard summer job

That's was his basic stats. He felt like he knocked it out of the park on his interview.

Initial medical DQ for prior adhd diagnosis - currently seeking a waiver (which we feel good about).

Thank you. Very similar to my son even down to the summer lifguatding job.

Good luck with the ADHD stuff. Had a crew chief that was on ADHD as a kid and had to get it cleared with the Army years after joining.

Everything we are hearing sounds good to us. We went ahead and had two doctors write letters saying that it is no longer clinically significant and records to prove that he stopped medication almost two years ago. We've been told that they only look at the last year.

That doesnt happen anymore as you have to tryout for the band now by a playing audition.

That's great. That sounds very similar to what I've seen.

Join an all-male outfit. People claim that they are all the same but its not true. The all male expierence is much better and a true experience. Don't join an integrated. If he is navy-marine then C-2 and K-2, if he is not soft and can do pt. Other good ones are Sq 17 (air force), E-1 (army) and L-1 (army)

I second this! I would have recommended H-1, but unfortunately they were disbanded a few years ago.

So, chances are, he's going to be happy in whatever outfit he joins. And he's going to think his outfit is better than the rest. Just what happens. Unfortunately you can't get an idea of outfit culture until you're in it. And while some outfits can maintain a good (or bad) culture for years, some can change substantially within 1-2 years. And even the outfits with a bad culture have produced great military officers and cadet leaders, and the outfits with great cultures have produced poor ones.

Regarding an all male outfit or not, I was also told the same thing regarding joining an all male one by cadets in K2. And I was on the fence till my New Student Conference. Ultimately I chose an integrated one. And while it is true that we probably did less, what one may call bonding experiences, and someone else may call "gay" stuff, I feel like I am happy with my choice. But I also had really good female buddies (the ones that weren't good quit by the end of fish year, sophomore year at the latest, or transferred to other units). We all held each other to a high standard. And there probably was some more drama here and there, but we figured it out.

The biggest issue I have with the all-male outfits is how they (back when I was there) treated female cadets from other outfits. Like they treat them like crap. Some would refuse to take their whip outs, some would push them out of the way in the chow line, call them names in common areas, etc. I don't understand how a man can treat a woman like that, especially at a school that espouses traditional and conservative values. Not to mention, these people will be one day leading females in the military (or civilian world), or be led by higher ranking females.

That's not to say that there weren't good guys in those outfits. I know many that were great people, didn't participate in that kind of stuff. But that is not something I would think should be considered acceptable. And maybe times have changed, and that isn't as common. I don't know.

Also, anyone that is more than 4 years removed from the Corps has no idea what their outfit is like anymore. Unit culture shifts a lot. If I told you my outfit, which was really good when I was there, is still a great option, I'd be lying.

Our country's civilian and military workplace includes both men and women at every level.

So, it's to your son's advantage to start learning as early as possible how to effectively work alongside and for females to optimize his chances for future success. Consider it part of his education.

I was in an all-male outfit over an half-century ago and there wasn't a single meaningful unit "bonding experience" that could not have also included female cadets even back then.

All JMHO, of course.
