I'll be in NO at the end of October with my wife. She has a conference and I'm going for the food. I need recommendations. I'm starting a new thread for location and dietary pickiness. We are staying at the conference hotel just west of the French quarter. We might have a few lunches but dinner will be the main chance to eat out. I'd love breakfast choices too.

Here's the catch. The wife hates seafood. So while I can do lunch spots solo that are seafood heavy, I need options that at least have non seafood options for her. Fried chicken. Chicken anything really is her choice.

Give me some spots. I'll take hole in the wall and higher price places too.

Bonus points to anyone that gives me things to do during the day too.

Most places will have a kiddie menu. She'll just have to ask for it

One of the best meals I've ever had in my life was the quail at Commander's Palace.

I'd add La Boulangerie as well (I think it's on magazine?)

Of course if you want to go classic NOLA….

Galatoir's if you're looking for fancy old school in the quarter.

I like non-quarter stuff now more that I have been a bunch, but If you haven't been doing a nice meal down there can be cool.

+1 for couchon's. I almost put "The Butcher" for a quick lunch. Which is couchon's sandwhich shop.

One of my favorite restaurants in the world is Restaurant Rebirth. Wife and I go to New Orleans at least annually, and this place is always on the list.

Best gumbo I've ever had, and I love gumbo. You better each get one though because you won't want to share.

And there's not a bunch of fish. The menu has tons of turf options.

This. All women are picky eaters, but jeez. Not sure I could put up with that.

alright other than that. Loves sports. Insisted the outdoor tv for the deck was 65 inches and not just 55 inches. She also wanted 2 tvs for the living room so we can watch two games at once. Unless she is using one for video games….

She will try the seafood I get but inevitably doesn't like it. She will go to seafood places but it drives me crazy when she orders a side of mashed potatoes as dinner because nothing on the menu is what she wants. So I like places that at least have chicken or a steak for her.

She can also setup and take down the 10x10 pop up tent on her own at sporting events while I'm coaching so that's a plus.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Got some good ideas. Anybody else is welcome to toss more out. Still trying to figure out a few things to do during the day so any ideas along those lines are appreciated.

GW Fins. They have steak, chicken and a pork chop on the menu. I'd suggest the Scalibut for yourself. Make sure you get the bread pudding.

More of a casual lunch spot but get a good burger at Port of Call.

Ruby Slipper for breakfast. Or to state the obvious Cafe du Monde.

If you have at least half the day, WW2 museum is fantastic. St. Louis cemetery tour is pretty interesting. I enjoyed walking the historic homes in the garden district. We did it on our own, not as a tour. If you like antiques and paintings you can spend a bunch of time walking the quarter and going in shops

I second the WWII museum for day activities. If you like whiskey, go to Sazerac House and book a tasting ahead of time. They will teach you how to make a proper New Orleans sazerac.

We also like to walk around Jackson Square and look at the local art and acts. You can walk around the streets with booze which makes the wife's shopping on Royal Street and Jackson Square tolerable.

Go to Frenchman street at night for Iive music. Quick $10 Uber to get there from the quarter.

On breakfast options, some friends recently went to Peacock room and loved it. Palace cafe is great. Stanley's is solid but no reservations.

Lots of folks will say Mothers, but I wasn't a huge fan personally.

Whatever you choose, try to get reservations for breakfast and dinner. You won't get into most of the best places without them.

She will probably enjoy Couchon.

You NEED to go to GW Fins, with or without her. As stated above they have non seafood items but their seafood is out of this world.

Coffee is strong at the Cafe DuMonde,
The donuts are too hot to touch.
Just like a fool when those sweet goodies cooled,
I ate til I ate way too much.

when I went last year Cochon felt a touch dated.... anyone else get that vibe from the menu?

I'm a huge fan of Coquette for a great meal... but hard to avoid seafood at any top place in NOLA

Highly recommend Mr. B's Bistro, one of my top 5 restaurant experiences. She can choose between the glazed pork chop, roasted chicken, or filet while you use a piece of crusty French bread to sop up the glorious sauce from the Barbecued Shrimp and tell her what she's missing out on.

I travel to New Orleans once a year to basically wander around. I love the city. Some suggestions on things to do:

WWII Museum - one of the best in the world
Ride the St Charles Street car - hop on around the quarter and then ride it to the end around Cooter Brown's tavern have a beer there and some oysters you can also walk to Camilla's Grill for old school diner vibe
then ride it back towards the quarter stop and walk thru Magazine street shopping or wandering around. Also can see all of the halloween decorations. Houses go all out. You can google some of the famous houses to walk by I think the car takes about 45 mins from the quarter to the end where I mentioned Cooter Brown's tavern
Cooking Class - New Orleans School of Cooking
Jackson Square - wander around looking at the painters
Tour at Sazarac House
Book Ghost Tours
Book Swamp Tours
Go to a Haunted House

I've got a ton of restaurant suggestions, Let me know your budget and vibe.

Also, New Orleans is probably the best lunch city in America. They have excellent lunches. One of the most Famous is the Friday lunch at Galatiore's.

Some good ideas for me to find things to do. Really appreciate those and it seems with all the recs for it the WW2 museum is a must. I need to get to googling more places.

Our budget isn't necessarily set. I have yet to step up to French Laundry levels but we sometimes hit >150 a person. Thankfully with relatively inexpensive tastes in day to day life, we don't really consider places too expensive on our vacations if the food is top notch. On the other hand I'm pretty casual usually and don't mind dives!

I'm asking ahead because I'd like to book places if they are hard to come buy. We have a group dinner booked by a friend at Commanders Palace for one night already.

Camellia Grill

For Dinner
St John
Curio
Couvant for French
Jacquesiimo's is great and fun - wonderful fried chicken

Check out St James Creamery for lunch
