I'm sure it is a guilty pleasure for some in the North
but I tried a couple of burgers about 10 years ago
and didn't understand how people craved it
unless it was 2am after a night of alcohol.

The worst fast food I've ever had. The burgers are school cafeteria quality.

No, it isn't. You can buy the burgers in the frozen foods section, and they are just as good as the burgers from the restaurant.
its terrible. I literally walked by one at least twice a day for three years when I lived in brooklyn. That includes many late nights after drinking. Never stopped once. That's how bad it is.
If you never stopped once how do you know how bad it is?

No, it is not. I was in St. Louis for work and remembered a road trip from 30 years prior when we went to White Castle there. I remembered it being awesome. Probably because little burgers for a little kid.
So I hunted one down. Unbelievable how bad it was as an adult. Pure crap.
Now "Southern White Castle", a/k/a Krystal Burger, is what late-night drunken mini-burgers should taste like.

20 years ago, I worked in downtown Savannah (and came back to Texas in 2 years). There was a Krystal Burger right across the street from our offices.
My guilty pleasure was their chili dogs once or twice a month.
I haven't had them since, but I do remember them.

I live in Texas. We don't have White Castle here. It's not an outlandish question
I like it. Very good high or drunk food.

Want to know what's sadder? I ate the frozen ones once and discovered they were terrible. Then I went to White Castle expecting the fresh ones to be better only to discover they were equally terrible.
Texas White Castle was also good, a/k/a Archie's 39 Cent Hamburgers. Or maybe it was just good to a broke-ass college student.
About 15 years ago I was in Indianapolis and stopped at a white castle. It wasn't terrible(I ate it), but I've never eaten at another one since.
last time I ate at one, I got food poisoning.

I think you have to be really, really drunk, i.e. starving, for them to taste good.
Harold & Kumar was one of the best commercials for a restaurant I've seen, but the product isn't very good.
Restaurant is mediocre as is McDonald's, Burger King, etc.
Frozen is repulsive. It is impossible to microwave frozen precooked beef without it tasting like funky gamey recooked beef. Soups with beef are different but patties, whole cuts, etc - nope, impossible.

It's all a function of how drunk you are and how hungry you are.
What I've learned from this thread is that the best thing about White Castle is that there is little drop off in quality from the restaurant to the frozen food section in the grocery store.
There's a reason they're called sliders
