Heading down to Cinamon Shore in a couple weeks with the family. I really like to cook and was wanting to stop by the local fish market and grab some fresh stuff to cook for the family. I don't cook much fish but want the kids to experience some really good local stuff out of the area. Any recommendatinos? Red fish the way to go? Are the crabs local? Would be cool to do a crab/shrimp boil which they've never had, and then maybe cook some fish.

were headed down next week - weve typically hit a couple of the local shops and found fresh catch at the local markets. Gulf shrimp season opens on the 15th, if thats the case head down to the marina and buy right off the Peggy Ann shrimp boat and boil em up!

We usually get a guide one day and come home with fresh redfish that we grill up on the halfshell. Reds & black drum are hitting nicely right now.

Havent been in a while so ill see which fish shops are good these days

Redfish, black drum, flounder all make the top of my list. Snapper is excellent, but always seems to cost more than I want to pay when I find it.

How does this work? Is there a certain time of day you go to the marina and they're out there? Didn't see anything on their Facebook page other than they're getting ready for the season to start. That would be awesome to get fresh from the boat though!

once they get ready to roll theyll usually post times - the FB page is the best to watch.

Typically theyre in by about 9am in the mornings and people will be lined up with coolers etc.

Best eating? Red snapper... and it my home it's not even close. YMMV
Best value? Probably Grouper. Fantastic eating fish and usually a decent price.

Not exactly what you're asking but…..There's a place called the Boiling Pot that will set you up a spot on the beach and provide a shrimp boil for you.
They get good reviews. I've seen them setting up several times and they look like they're organized.

Go to Paul's for the freshest fish and get a fried shrimp Po Boy while you're there. I'd get Red Snapper and make Snapper Veracruz

Hope your trip this week is going great. I just checked on the Peggy Ann FB and they're still undergoing repairs on the boat and won't be ready until 17th or 18th. Any other boats you know of to get fresh shrimp from, or should I just get them at Pauls? Thanks.

The Peggy Ann is in the water waiting for opening day on 15th … we're headed to Paul's this morning for shrimp tonight, will see what they're spreading

Our charter this week we got skunked and had to come in early due to storm … no fresh redfish on the half shell this time, but a fun day on the water

OK, maybe I misunderstood their post. They said "We will hopefully be open either Thursday the 17th or Friday the 18th" so maybe that means they'll get some shrimp stocked up for a couple days before opening up. Looking forward to some fresh shrimp!

Sorry about the bad luck on your fishing.

Paul's is loaded down with snapper, trout, flounder, tuna & mahi filets. Fresh drum & squid/octopus - shrimp look great

Side note. I've bought seafood at Paul's several times and it's been good quality and fresh. That said, they say that their 'specialty' is Strawberry Grouper which they normally have available. I'm skeptical that it's actually that because I've never seen Strawberry Grouper for sale anywhere else

Best fish I've ever eaten falls between Barracuda or Wahoo.
