I mentioned Caruso could play in the the NBA early in his college career and TexAgs exploded with laughter and ridicule

Caruso is the reason why when anyone says anyone might play in the NBA the response is at least "I guess, maybe"

His path was so improbable that now it seems like anyone is at least possible

Part of that is because he brings so many intangibles to the game. His value is not one that jumps off the screen like most players unless you are really watching. He excels at doing what others players don't like doing and has an elite basketball mind that has the ability to see all the nuances of the game.

Lol. He had ALL the measurables and skills to be a contributor in the NBA. Just a matter of putting it together which he started to do his senior year and the year after.

The only improbable thing was whether he would get drafted or not.

Yeah, he's a very strange player too, you just don't see many like him so you can see why NBA scouts, let alone all of the randos on this board, didn't think he'd make it at the next level. At every step there's been an "okay, but will he still have that kind of impact at the next level" that he had to prove.

How many NBA guards play college for four years, never average above ten points a game and shoot under 37% from 3? There can't be more than a handful right?

Fair points, but he also got Swoped a lot wrt athletic ability.

He always had the defensive skils and playmaking, but he put in real work on his 3 in the G League..and learning to play more selfishly at times

No idea. Feel free to look it up. By midway through his freshman year he showed NBA potential on defense, was always great at timing steals and blocking shots from day 1.. literally elite in those categories. By midway through his senior year, he gained a feel for attacking the rim and looked like an NBA player taking it to the hoop.

While you were looking at stats and claiming he was a European player, many others here could see the raw potential and the rare skills he possessed. His starting baseline of talent was above most 2-3 year college players that average 15 pts a game and go to the NBA early.

Measurables were fine... BUT the NBA requires guards and wings to be able to nail 3s at a high clip and decent volume. He didn't do that at A&M.

That's why his NBA journey was so improbable. Most guys (except maybe bigs), don't figure out how to shoot post-college and make the NBA after figuring out those skills. It's all a credit to Alex's work ethic. Shooting isn't easy for him. He works his a** off, clearly.

Nope. Wrong. It was plainly obvious to everyone. That's why people that get paid a lot of money to predict these things all passed on him and made him toil in the G league for several years before putting him on an NBA roster full time.

Not improbable at all.
bobinator

Yeah that's the part of his game that casuals were getting wrong all the back to high school. I covered him as a recruit and he was always a high level athlete. Maybe didn't always have that first-step quickness that elite point guards have, partially because he's so tall, but from a sprint speed and jumping ability standpoint he was always a really good athlete.

Interesting enough, the people who said he had NBA potential ended up being right. And you ended up being wrong.

Guys with tons of physical tools early in their career who take a while to figure it all out.

Not really tough at all. Of course, Marcel is TBD, but the majority of the football board has already written him off.

They have the best player in the NBA and they have won in the post season. Never underestimate that they are a seasoned team with Jokic he was great as always. He should be the mvp again but he outplayed the probable winner. Let's see how it plays out but OKC has lost home court and they have no one who can stop Jokic.

Measurables? He's a 6'4" white boy who isn't a good shooter playing in a league that values athleticism and shooting.

I have no doubt that he's absolutely worked his tail off. He also had some lucky bounces go his way. Nothing wrong with that.

It is so awesome watching him be great.

Back in 2013 during a summer at the Rec, Caruso and some friends rolled up to play. I proceeded to get absolutely embarrassed as he locked me up with defense I'd never experienced before. This same guy is now back to back all-defensive team while guarding the best offensive players in the world.

I'm pulling for OKC hard. I'd love to see him get a ring.

I'll say it: If AC was black he would have been considered more of a NBA prospect at A&M.

Yes. It wasn't crazy, even in 2015/2016, to say he could make a team and stick around a while. A large number of Ag fans are tough on our own players but it's not like no one was saying he could make a roster, even if not drafted.

I think a bigger thing than this is that everyone has seen better college players not make it or even get close to making it. Another thing that helped Caruso that I don't think anyone appreciated enough at the time (I know I definitely didn't) was the G-league becoming a much more realistic path to actually making the NBA. I read an article where last year more than half of all NBA players had spent at least some time in the G-league, that was not the case back in the early 2010's.

Sure. Here are some.

After going undrafted and with a VERY short stent with the76ers, he was able to sign with OKC's g-league team, who had an assistant that is now his head coach.

I'm not insulting the guy at all. I'm super happy for him and his game is obviously working out well for him.
