I can't decide if I like this or absolutely hate it, but has anyone been following what the Big 12 is doing for the court for the championships? The women's games started today.

That might actually be more annoying than the Boise St. football field.

I'd be interested to see how the players feel about it.

I think its cool during Intros, Time Outs, Half Time, etc.

But the basketball purist in me wants a traditional looking court.

Can't they make it look traditional? Like - it could look however they want. It's the feel and bounce (along with consistent up light) that I think would be annoying.

Right, during the game I would want the court to look traditional.

Cougar High's court has looked like this for a handful of years. Their intro is pretty dang cool.

The difference is that UH and the other people that do this use a projection onto the court. That's why the lights are off in the pregame.

This IS the court.

It's a glass surface over an LED screen. I just wonder how it plays, it just has to feel different right?

Along those lines...

I think it would have been cool to make the offensive end of each half of the court whatever that team's home court looked like or something. Somehow mix the elements of the two teams' home courts.

How does it work with play on it. I know some of these tourneys put stickers on the floor then you get players slipping and sliding around on them

Full court advertising during halftimes and timeouts coming to a court near you.....

I can actually think of a lot of ways this could make the timeout commercials-disguised as games way more than ours are currently. Granted that's an exceedingly low bar.

Didn't like it when I first saw it and still don't.

It looks like a scene out of Bladerunner, but worse. Even in dystopian sci fi movies they aren't so cynical to put electronic advertising displays on floors, only the sides of every building.

Yes I am old

But seriously, I am curious what it feels like to play on a court like that.

If I was a coach, we would practice on it and I would mess with the players by making lines move around during play, change the floor to look like you're about to run off a cliff, make it look like there are wet spots on the floor, etc.

You know...to toughen them up.

wow looking like we are getting vegas spherizing the court...

I guess this trend will continue everywhere The concentration of eyeballs is the greatest

not surprising

better get used to it.

Can the home team use the court to annoy FT against the opposing team?

One vote cast for "hate it" from me. Agree with a previous poster who said it looked like something gaudy out of a Vegas casino. Also think it could be gamed with subtle light frequency changes or other distractions when the visiting team is shooting.

Is this what the NBA is using for the different court looks they use for NBA Cup games? Or are they actually changing the floor for those games?
bobinator

No the NBA cup courts are actual courts.

This Big 12 tournament is the first official competition in the States to use the glass floor. The only other event they used it for was the celebrity game and the Saturday night stuff at last year's NBA All Star game I think. (Maybe this year too?)

Kentucky also used one for Big Blue Madness last year.

Any insight on how these courts play? Are they more slippery than a conventional wood court?

I don't think so. They've undergone pretty extensive testing including some games in europe and they have their own "lab" where they have athletes come test it out.

Only major drawback (other than how absurdly expensive I assume it is, is that people in the courtside seats can't have drinks, lol.

It seems to be waterproof enough from the top, but I'd guess liquid getting underneath it is the concern.

I thought I saw a longer video somewhere how coaches could use the floor to show routes for plays during practice, which I thought was pretty cool. Now if we can just get our freakin' solar roadways.
