The calendar reads March. The regular season has concluded. Our Texas A&M Fightin Aggies went 21-10 including an 11-7 record in SEC play. The Aggies earned a 6 seed in this week's conference tourney in Nashville. Tonight, in the nightcap, Texas A&M will play Oklahoma who beat South Carolina last night 86-74.
The Aggies will be dancing after hearing their name called on Sunday, most likely a 9 or 10 seed with a small chance at an 11. In year 1 with Bucky McMillan at the helm, the Aggies have stormed through the conference and done enough to be dancing come March. The last coach hired, no scholarship players on the roster, most of the portal entries already committed elsewhere, no staff, nobody in the building, Bucky had some work to do. 11 months later, he's got us in this position.
While we all await Sunday, first there's some business to tend to in Nashville. It will be a third matchup with the Sooners, with the Aggies taking the first two. This time in a neutral site the Aggies will look to earn a 22nd win and maintain their rhythm against an Oklahoma team that's been playing hot winning 5 in a row after falling to us in Norman.
For those unfamiliar with their play, they have been led all season by their backcourt duo of Nigel Pack and Xzayvier Brown who average 16.1 and 15.6 ppg. Pack has a great outside shot and Brown is a 3 way scorer who relies more on getting to the paint. However, I believe their recent uptick in play is due to the improvement of their bigs. While not the tallest or most physical team, their bigs play solid offensively and will fight for second chances. Their pick and roll game is solid and they are very good athletes for the position. Wague at 6'10 leads the way down low on the glasses but it's forwards Tae Davis and Derrion Reid who can cut effectively and even put the ball on the ground.
As for the Aggies, we're all aware of what Bucky Ball is. Intense, full court press defense, quick offense that relies on 3 point shooting and driving to the basket. This team runs behind the leadership and effort of senior Rashaun Agee. He's our motor. We have plenty of guards who can score in multiple ways. Pop Isaacs, Marcus Hill, Josh Holloway, Rylen Griffen, and Ali Dibba can put the ball on the ground and attack the basket. Isaacs, Griffen, Dibba, and Ruben Dominguez are sharpshooters from deep. Our bigs Agee and Zach Clemence can score inside but both can even knock down a three. While we aren't the biggest team by any stretch, we play physical team defense. We go all out for rebounds and we put big time pressure on opposing offenses with pesky mother in law defense. At our best we play strong solid team defense.
We will be getting Oklahoma on a back to back. Less than 24 hours after beating South Carolina they have to turn around and face Bucky's system. A tournament setting is where we'd love to see Bucky Ball at its finest. A team on a short turnaround with little time to prepare… get ready to be pressed the second you step off the bus until the final buzzer sounds.
Our postseason spot may already be set. Media and fans love to over emphasize what one conference tournament game will do to a seeding. We will be dancing. Tonight just provides an opportunity to play another solid opponent, showcase our style on a tournament stage, and play for SEC pride. Let's go BTHO oklahoma, once more, end their season, and keep this Bucky Train rolling into March!
